Exascale supercomputing

AMD has joined the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Cray Inc. in announcing what is expected to be the world's fastest exascale-class supercomputer, scheduled to be delivered to ORNL in 2021. To deliver what is expected to be more than 1.5 exaflops of expected processing performance, the Frontier system is designed to use future generation High Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) optimized, custom AMD EPYC CPU, and AMD Radeon Instinct GPU processors. Researchers at ORNL will use the Frontier system's unprecedented computing power and next generation AI techniques to simulate, model and advance understanding of the interactions underlying the science of weather, sub-atomic structures, genomics, physics, and other important scientific fields. The U.S. Department of Energy has signed a contract with Cray Inc. to build the Frontier supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which is anticipated to debut in 2021 as the world's most powerful computer with a performance of greater than 1.5 exaflops. Read further...
Cray Inc. and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) are pushing forward the technology boundaries of computational science with the development of the "Frontier" exascale supercomputer for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), expected to be delivered in 2021. The system will be based on Cray's new Shasta architecture and Cray Slingshot interconnect and will feature future generation AMD EPYC CPU and Radeon Instinct GPU technology. This is the third major contract award for the Shasta architecture and Slingshot interconnect; previous awards were for the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center's NERSC-9 pre-exascale system, and the Argonne National Laboratory's Aurora exascale system. Quantum computing

Majorana particles are very peculiar members of the family of elementary particles. First predicted in 1937 by the Italian physicist Ettore Majorana, these particles belong to the group of so-called fermions, a group that also includes electrons, neutrons and protons. Majorana fermions are electrically neutral and also their own anti-particles. These exotic particles can, for example, emerge as quasi-particles in topological superconductors and represent ideal building blocks for topological quantum computers. Read further...
A novel material that consists of a single sheet of carbon atoms could lead to new designs for optical quantum computers. Physicists from the University of Vienna and the Institute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona have shown that tailored graphene structures enable single photons to interact with each other. ELIXIR and the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) have announced a Strategic Partnership that will provide technical standards and regulatory frameworks to facilitate responsible sharing of genomic data across national borders. The effort will enable the creation of a secure infrastructure to store, access, and analyse genomic and sensitive health data from tens of millions of participants across and beyond Europe. In February 2019, an international independent assessment committee reviewed the quality, impact, relevance and viability of the eScience Center over the period January 2014-June 2018. The committee was impressed with the technological expertise and concluded that the research is of excellent quality. According to the multidisciplinary committee of experts, the eScience Center has national leadership in its core areas of research. A number of recommendations was made to further improve the visibility and impact of the eScience Center's work. Read further...

For more than a decade, a team of international researchers led by Berkeley Lab bioscientists has been studying Photosystem II (PSII), a protein complex in green plants, algae, and cyanobacteria that plays a crucial role in photosynthesis. They’re now moving more quickly toward an understanding of this three-billion-year-old biological system, thanks to an integrated superfacility framework of experimental instrumentation with computational and data facilities. PSII researchers working at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) recently began using the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to enable real-time processing of experimental data at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC).
