The University of Maribor and XENYA signed a contract for the supply of an HPC system for the project "Upgrading National Research Infrastructures HPC - RIVR". The coordinator of this project is the University of Maribor, with two consortium partners: the Institute of Information Sciences (IZUM) and the Faculty of Information Studies in Novo Mesto (FIS). The entire project is worth 20 million euro. The duration of the project is from 1 March 2018 to 15 September 2020. It is a substantial upgrade of existing HPC capacities at the national Slovenian level, based on its own hardware and software architecture design. Read further...

Exascale supercomputing

Intel Corporation and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will deliver the first supercomputer with a performance of one exaFLOP in the United States. The system being developed at DOE's Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago - named "Aurora" - will be used to dramatically advance scientific research and discovery. The contract is valued at more than $500 million and will be delivered to Argonne National Laboratory by Intel and sub-contractor Cray Inc. in 2021. Read further...

NVIDIA has introduced the Jetson Nano, an AI computer that makes it possible to create millions of intelligent systems. The small but powerful CUDA-X AI computer delivers 472 GFLOPS of compute performance for running modern AI workloads and is highly power-efficient, consuming as little as 5 watts. Unveiled at the GPU Technology Conference by NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang, Jetson Nano comes in two versions - the $99 devkit for developers, makers and enthusiasts and the $129 production-ready module for companies looking to create mass-market edge systems. Quantum computing

When subject to the laws of quantum mechanics, systems made of many interacting particles can display behaviour so complex that its quantitative description defies the capabilities of the most powerful computers in the world. In 1981, the visionary physicist Richard Feynman argued we can simulate such complex behaviour using an artificial apparatus governed by the very same quantum laws - what has come to be known as a "quantum simulator". At the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, researchers have realized the swap of electron spins between distant quantum dots. The discovery brings us a step closer to future applications of quantum information, as the tiny dots have to leave enough room on the microchip for delicate control electrodes. Preferred Networks Inc. (PFN) will independently build a new private supercomputer called MN-2 and start operating it in July 2019. MN-2 is a cutting-edge multi-node GPGPU computing platform, using NVIDIA V100 Tensor Core GPUs. This, combined with two other PFN private supercomputers - MN-1 (in operation since September 2017) and MN-1b (in operation since July 2018), will provide PFN with total computing resources of about 200 PetaFLOPS. Forced Physics DCT offers a new data centre cooling system that can drastically simplify the way data centers are built and operated.
