The Belgian federal government has decided to make available a maximum of 5 million euro for participation in a pre-exascale hosting consortium. This was announced by the Belgian minister for Science Sophie Wilmès and the minster for Digital Agenda Philippe De Backer. Quantum computing

Recently, a research collaboration has begun between QuSoft, a quantum software research centre based at Amsterdam Science Park, and the Bosch Group, a global provider of technologies and services. In this project, researchers from QuSoft and Bosch will investigate potential quantum computing use cases at Bosch, with a focus on applications in the engineering and artificial intelligence/machine learning fields. Amsterdam Science Park, the birthplace of the European internet, is once again at the heart of these new developments. With a large number of scientific institutes, including the Centre for Mathematics and Informatics (CWI), SURFsara, eScience Center and UvA Informatics Institute, the park is the main centre for artificial intelligence and Big Data research in the Netherlands. The potential computing revolution that quantum computers have long promised is based on their weird property called superposition. Namely, qubits can take both logical states 0 and 1 simultaneously, on top of any value in between. By mastering superpositions of the whole quantum memory, quantum computers can quickly solve problems that would require too much computing time from regular computers working with simply 0s and 1s. Quantum computers will process significantly more information at once compared to today's computers. But the building blocks that contain this information - quantum bits, or "qubits" - are way too sensitive to their surroundings to work well enough right now to build a practical quantum computer. Intel, Bluefors and Afore have introduced the first cryoprober, a quantum testing device named the Cryogenic Wafer Prober, developed specifically to speed the development of quantum computing solutions. For the first time, researchers have demonstrated a way to map and measure large-scale photonic quantum correlation with single-photon sensitivity. The ability to measure thousands of instances of quantum correlation is critical for making photon-based quantum computing practical. Read further...

The ISC High Performance organizers have announced that two of the most well-regarded figures in the HPC community will be delivering the Tuesday and Wednesday keynote addresses at this year's event. The conference and exhibition will take place from June 16-20 in Frankfurt, Germany, and will be held at Messe Frankfurt. Over 3500 HPC enthusiasts are expected to attend this global event. Applications

Change is in the air, ice, and water, of the Arctic Ocean. The North Pole sits steadfastly in the middle, surrounded by about five million square miles of floating sea ice of the Arctic pack. In 2018, the air warmed near the pole, making the second-warmest Arctic air temperatures on record. What's more, sea ice shrank to its second-lowest cover on record, both according to polar-orbiting satellite data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Recent observed warming in the ocean has also contributed to the decline in sea ice (e.g., Polyakov et al., 2018). Wildlife such as caribou and reindeer depend on sea ice to get across ocean water. Closer to home, shrinking sea ice is linked to cold snaps from a weakened polar vortex, according to a 2018 study. Longtime University at Buffalo (UB) faculty member and researcher Abani Patra has been named director of the university's Center for Computational Research (CCR). The appointment was announced by Venu Govindaraju, vice president for research and economic development at UB. Noise-cancelling headphones have become a popular accessory for frequent flyers. By analyzing the background frequencies produced by an airplane in flight and generating an "anti-noise" sound wave that is perfectly out of phase, such headphones eliminate disturbing background sounds. JD Cloud, a full-service Cloud computing platform and integrated Cloud service provider from China's E-commerce giant JD.com, has adopted Mellanox ConnectX adapters with advanced offloads to improve performance, efficiency, security and reduce cost of their data centre. JD Cloud worked closely with Mellanox and the Linux kernel community to develop pioneering new capabilities based on Accelerated Switching and Packet Processing (ASAP2) technology supported by the ConnectX series of Ethernet network adapters. The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently awarded funding to a team led by the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) for further development of Open OnDemand, an open-source software platform supporting web-based access to high performance computing (HPC) services.
