At the recent eScience Conference in AmsterdamPrimeur Magazinewas able to talk with Prof. Dieter Kranzlmüller, Director of the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) in Germany about high-performance computing (HPC). Not long ago, there were some very big announcements in Munich concerning new supercomputers. Focus on Europe

On January 1, 2019 the new e-IRGSP6 project, the follow-up project of e-IRGSP5, was launched to continue the support for the e-Infrastructure Reflection Group (e-IRG). The five partners in the project consortium held their kick-off meeting on January 23, 2019 in Luxembourg. The e-IRGSP6 project will run for 30 months and is coordinated by Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH) in Germany. Read further...
HPE has won the contract to build a supercomputer that will drive France's AI and HPC efforts. The computer will be part of GENCI, the French national infrastructure for HPC resources and facilities. The system came at the behest of an action issued by President of France Emmanuel Macron in support of the national strategy to make France the European leader in artificial intelligence research. PRACE has issued a Call for Proposals for HPC compute resources from DECI-15 (Tier-1) on 15 January 2019, 12:00 UTC. The PRACE Distributed European Computing Initiative (DECI) programme provides cross-national access to European Tier-1 HPC resources - national systems. Access will be awarded for a period of 12 months, beginning 3 June 2019. The deadline for submission of proposals for Tier-1 systems is 28 February 2019, at 17:00 UTC. Late-stage undergraduate and Master's students are invited to apply for the PRACE Summer of HPC 2019 programme, to be held in July and August 2019. Consisting of a training week and two months on placement at top HPC centres around Europe, the programme offers participants the opportunity to learn and share more about PRACE and HPC, and includes accommodation, a stipend and travel to their HPC centre. It may not look spectacular, but its performance certainly is: with their acquisition of an NVIDIA DGX-2, the University of Antwerp and imec have become the first university in the Benelux to own the latest generation of supercomputer. "This computer has a calculation speed of two petaflops per second", explained Steven Latré, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Antwerp/imec. Read further...
The Dutch governement has allocated 108 million euro for innovative projects within the National Science Agenda (NWA), 30 million euro for the Dutch participation in international astronomical research, 55 million euro for strategic research collaboration via sector plans - 70 million euro annually from 2020 onwards - and 5 million euro for more diversity in science. Minister Van Engelshoven (OCW) has announced this in her letter 'Curious and committed - the value of science'. Mellanox Technologies Ltd.'s 200 Gigabit HDR InfiniBand solutions were selected to accelerate a multi-phase supercomputer system by CSC - the Finnish IT Center for Science. The new supercomputers, set to be deployed in 2019 and 2020, will serve the Finnish researchers in universities and research institutes, enhancing climate, renewable energy, astrophysics, nanomaterials and bioscience, among a wide range of exploration activities. The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) will have their own separate partition for diverse simulation tasks ranging from ocean fluxes to atmospheric modeling and space physics. Read further...

Intensive research is being carried out on transparent electronics, a new area of study that represents the merging of electronic and optical devices. Researchers at the University of Basel have used computer simulations on the "Piz Daint" supercomputer to identify chemical elements that could drive forward research in this field. Read further...
Atoms and molecules in crystalline solids are arranged in regular three-dimensional lattices. The atoms interact with each other via various forces, finally reaching a state of minimum energy. Near absolute zero, the lattice oscillations freeze, so that interactions between electron spins dominate. A particularly interesting case occurs when the spins cannot all align at the same time to reach a state of lowest energy. This results in a frustrated system in which the spins are almost completely disordered and are therefore referred to as a spin liquid. Read further...
16 European partners have started project InPulse in Eindhoven on 23 January 2019. It will offer new-entrant companies direct access to state-of-the-art manufacturing of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) based on indium phosphide. This will enable the development of products for a wide range of new markets. The project is backed by 14 million euro of funding from the European Commission. The pilot line will enable innovators to develop products fast, thus being able to focus on their products rather than the technologically complex task of fabrication. Read further...
