The building blocks of most observable matters are electrons and nuclei. Following the laws of quantum mechanics, their behaviour can be described in terms of their wave function, sort of a diffuse cloud that is related to the probability of observing them in a given point and time. By solving the Schrodinger equation, it is possible to make models and predictions of any material, including water. But there is a catch. As the number of electrons and nuclei increases, the complexity involved soon become intractable even with the fastest supercomputers, and even after a century of celebrated progress in optimizing such calculations. In fact, quantum mechanical calculations are still unaffordable for systems with more than a few hundred atoms, or for a time period longer than a nanosecond, which is 1/1,000,000,000th of a second. A team of Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research - NCCR MARVEL PIs has won a swissuniversities P-5 grant to further develop the Materials Cloud web platform for Computational Open Science. The project will ultimately allow users to autonomously contribute hundreds of different data entries in the different sections without having to interact with one of the platform maintainers. At the ESFRI Roadmap 2018 Launch Event in Vienna, Austria on 11 September 2018, e-IRG Chair Gabriele von Voigt explained the role of e-IRG in the ESFRI Roadmap 2018. She stated that e-IRG is the e-Infrastructure Reflection Group within Europe. e-IRG works very closely together with ESFRI. The e-Infrastructure Reflection Group is mainly concerned about the e-Infrastructures which form the basis for the research infrastructures. Mellanox Technologies Ltd.'s 200 Gigabit HDR InfiniBand solutions were selected to accelerate a world-leading supercomputer at the High-Performance Computer Center of the University of Stuttgart (HLRS). The 5000-node supercomputer named "Hawk", will be built in 2019 and provide 24 petaFLOPs of compute performance. By utilizing the InfiniBand fast data throughput and the smart In-Network Computing acceleration engines, HLRS users will be able to achieve the highest HPC and AI application performance, scalability and efficiency. IBM has signed an agreement with Samsung to manufacture 7-nanometer (nm) microprocessors for IBM Power Systems, IBM Z and LinuxONE, high-performance computing (HPC) systems, and Cloud offerings. The agreement combines Samsung's industry-leading semiconductor manufacturing with IBM's high-performance CPU designs. This combination is being designed to drive unmatched systems performance, including acceleration, memory and I/O bandwidth, encryption and compression speed, as well as system scaling. A year-long acceptance process for the 200-petaflop, IBM AC922 Summit supercomputer at the US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is complete. Now in production use, the ultra-efficient Eagle high-performance computer will power scientific insights to accelerate the U.S. energy system transformation. The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) already had the world's largest supercomputer dedicated to energy efficiency and renewable energy, Peregrine - but with its replacement system, Eagle, the laboratory's computing capability has more than tripled. IBM and its subsidiary The Weather Company have unveiled a powerful new global weather forecasting system that will provide the most accurate local weather forecasts ever seen worldwide. The new IBM Global High-Resolution Atmospheric Forecasting System (GRAF) will be the first hourly-updating commercial weather system that is able to predict something as small as thunderstorms globally. Humans have found uses for woody plants since time immemorial - tools, shelter, firewood. Today, scientists are working to add more major uses to the list: renewable, cost-competitive biofuel and value-added materials. Turning trees and waste biomass into liquid fuels and other bioproducts has long been a goal of researchers and entrepreneurs, but for many years, the problem proved as unyielding as a stout oak in a storm. This resistance can be traced all the way to the molecules that make up the cell walls of plants, where energy-rich cellulose fibers intermix with hemicellulose and hardy lignin. Much biofuel research has focused on how to design "pretreatment" methods that efficiently separate these components so they can be turned into valuable products. Read further...

The coveted prize was presented to the winner on 11 January 2019 in the BT Arena by Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh TD, and Managing Director of BT Ireland, Shay Walsh. How can a computer learn to generalize the knowledge contained in a huge dataset and to find solutions for complex problems on its own? This question is the focus of two new assistant professorships at the University of Freiburg: Robot Learning and Representation Learning. They are the result of a successful application in the programme "Artificial Intelligence Baden-Württemberg" administered by the state Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts. The professorships will join the research underway at the Faculty of Engineering. The state of Baden-Württemberg is sponsoring the professorships over the next four years with a total amount of 1.2 million euro.
