Quantum computing

University of Southern California (USC) scientists have demonstrated a theoretical method to enhance the performance of quantum computers, an important step to scale the transformative technology with potential to solve some of society's biggest challenges. Read further...
Sending information over long distances can be done by encoding messages into light pulses, and sending them through optical fibres. But there is loss in fibres, so amplification is necessary along the way. Repeaters amplify the light pulses at specific intervals along the line and voila - transatlantic communication is possible. But there is a problem: It is not completely secure. The information can be picked up, and even if it is encoded, codes can be broken. Read further...
Professor Michelle Simmons' team at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney has demonstrated a compact sensor for accessing information stored in the electrons of individual atoms - a breakthrough that brings us one step closer to scalable quantum computing in silicon. Read further...

DataDirect Networks (DDN), a market expert of at-scale storage solutions, has signed a new collaboration with Council of Scientific Industrial Research - Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-CEERI), focused on an objective to design, test and execute computation and storage solutions that will enable artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) workloads. The collaboration will provide a complete infrastructure solution that can deliver Artificial Intelligence as a Service (AIaaS) for CSIR-CEERI customers. Read further...

Hardware

Electrical engineers in the accelerator physics group at TU Darmstadt have developed a design for a laser-driven electron accelerator so small it could be produced on a silicon chip. It would be inexpensive and with multiple applications. The design, which has been published inPhysical Review Letters, is now being realised as part of an international collaboration. Read further...
Computer scientists develop algorithms that control everything from unmanned aerial vehicles to desktop computers to the cellphones in our pockets. But it can be complicated to match the code they develop to hardware systems that vary so widely. Researcher Ali Akoglu of the University of Arizona is on a team creating a 'domain-focused advanced software-reconfigurable heterogeneous system on a chip' - a device with a big name to solve a big problem. Read further...
Photonics is an emerging technology with a potential multitrillion market. Innovative small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are at the forefront of this development, but the R&D costs are prohibitive for them. That's why 12 partners from northwestern Europe are creating an open access pilot line that will drastically reduce costs and time for the pilot production of new products. This new facility is projected to be the incubator of a thousand new companies and thousands of jobs. The 14 million euro project (OIP4NWE) is supported by the European Regional Development Fund and kicked off this week in Eindhoven. Read further...
WekaIO, an innovation expert in high-performance, scalable file storage for data intensive applications, has achieved a second-place ranking on the IO-500 10 Node Challenge list, coming within 5% of the world's fastest supercomputer. The IO-500 is a ranking list comparing storage systems that work in tandem with the world's largest supercomputers. Each system is evaluated by the IO-500 benchmark that measures the storage performance using read/write bandwidth for large files and read/write/listing performance for small files. Storage performance in supercomputers is critical for large-scale simulation, Big Data analysis, and artificial intelligence (AI). The IO-500 list serves as a resource for companies looking to improve their storage performance, which in turn helps to improve processor performance. Read further...
Researchers at the University of Birmingham are set to benefit from the largest IBM POWER9 Artificial Intelligence (AI) cluster in the UK, delivering unprecedented performance for AI workloads. Working with OCF, the high-performance compute, storage and data analytics integrator, the University will integrate a total of 11 IBM POWER9-based IBM Power Systems servers into its existing high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure, the Birmingham Environment for Academic Research (BEAR). Every year, three to five million people around the world suffer from severe illness caused by influenza, primarily during the months of November through March. Now a new study by researchers from several universities including the University of California (UC) San Diego, published earlier this month inACS Central Science, suggests a novel approach for combatting this sometimes deadly virus. Read further...
It's easy to take a lot for granted. Scientists do this when they study stress, the force per unit area on an object. Scientists handle stress mathematically by assuming it to have symmetry. That means the components of stress are identical if you transform the stressed object with something like a turn or a flip. Supercomputer simulations show that at the atomic level, material stress doesn't behave symmetrically. The findings could help scientists design new materials such as glass or metal that doesn't ice up. Read further...
As new methods have become available for understanding and manipulating matter at its most fundamental levels, researchers working in the interdisciplinary field of materials science have been increasingly successful in synthesizing new kinds of materials. Often the goal of researchers in the field is to design materials that incorporate properties that can be useful for performing specific functions. Such materials can, for example, be more chemically stable or resistant to physical breakage, have advantageous electromagnetic characteristics, or react in predictable ways to specific environmental conditions. Japanese computer scientists have succeeded in developing a special purpose computer that can project high-quality 3D holography as a video. With the newly developed 'phase type' HORN-8, the calculation method for adjusting the phase of light was implemented, and the researchers were successful at projecting holography information as a 3D video with high-quality images. This research was published inOptics Expresson September 28, 2018. Read further...
