The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) catalogue was launched last week in Vienna. It is supposed to be an entry point for millions of European researchers and professionals into IT services, made available to them.Primeur Magazinehad a look to the HPC services listed in the catalogue. What did we see? A lot of animations in the portal, but looking to the content we did not find much information. Read further...

Exascale supercomputing

Launched on 1 October 2018, the European EPEEC project - European joint Effort toward a Highly Productive Programming Environment for Heterogeneous Exascale Computing - has received 3.9 million euro in funding to develop and deploy a production-ready parallel programming environment. This will turn future Exascale supercomputers, which will be overwhelmingly heterogeneous, into manageable platforms for application developers in different domains. Read further...
A team of computational scientists and engineers from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and NVIDIA has been awarded the ACM Gordon Bell Prize for applying an exascale-class deep learning application to extreme climate data and breaking the exaop (1 billion billion calculations) computing barrier for the first time with a deep learning application. Read further...
Spain and Portugal have signed an agreement for the creation of the Iberian Advanced Computing Network in 2019. The objective is to coordinate policies, strategies and initiatives of both in supercomputing, distributed computing and quantum computing, which will allow to enhance different scientific-technological areas, such as medicine, the pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry, agro-industry, new materials, energy, security and communication. Quantum computing

A new test to spot where the ability to exploit the power of quantum mechanics has evolved in nature has been developed by physicists at the University of Warwick. The test identifies a tell-tale hallmark of quantum coherence, classifying the properties of particles in a quantum state that are interacting with a real-world environment. The test should allow scientists to quantify and track quantum coherence in the natural world using laboratory experiments. Read further...
A scenario of artificial intelligence could see the emergence of circumstances in which models of simple organisms could be capable of experiencing the various phases of life in a controlled virtual environment. This is what has been designed by the QUTIS research group at the UPV/EHU's Department of Physical Chemistry, but the scenario is that of quantum computers: an artificial life protocol that encodes quantum behaviours belonging to living systems, such as self-replication, mutation, interaction between individuals, birth and death, and has been executed on an IBM ibmqx4 Cloud quantum computer. This is the first experimental realization on a quantum computer of a quantum algorithm of artificial life following Darwin's laws of evolution. Read further...
Quantum Machines, a start-up developing the next generation of control and operation systems for quantum computers, has raised $5.5 million in seed financing from venture-capital firms TLV Partners and Battery Ventures. TLV led the round. The firm, based in Israel, was founded by Drs. Itamar Sivan, Yonatan Cohen and Nissim Ofek, three physics Ph.D.s with long track records in the fields of quantum computing and quantum electronics. Read further...
