Atos, a global expert in digital transformation; Bayer, an international life science company; and RWTH Aachen University are working together to evaluate the use of Quantum Computing in research and analysis of human disease patterns. Computing and life science experts from these three institutions will use the Atos Quantum Learning Machine, the world's highest-performing quantum simulator, to research the evolution of multi-morbidity human diseases from large data repositories. Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) users from Germany's leading academic institutions are now able to move data to and from GCS facilities significantly faster - the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS), Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), and Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) will be able to push Germany's high-speed X-WiN network to its limits. Computing time utilization has started for a new set of leading-edge, large-scale research projects on the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing's (GCS) three high-performance computing (HPC) systems. GCS leadership approved 816.3 million core hours as part of the organisation's 20th Call for Large-Scale Projects - research projects that require a minimum of 35 million core hours of computing time over a period of twelve months - for 13 simulation projects that met the strict qualification criteria set by the GCS Steering Committee. The computing time grants support national research activities from the fields of Computational and Scientific Engineering (351.3 million core hours), Astrophysics (247.5 million core hours), and High Energy Physics (217.5 million core hours). Boston will host Nyriad at SC18 in Dallas, between 12-15th November, who will be running two demonstrations on stand #3255. The first demonstration, in partnership with BeeGFS, a parallel cluster file system developed by ThinkParQ, will harness Nyriad's NSULATE that complements BeeGFS to enable high performance, scale out parallel file systems with data resilience beyond RAID. The OpenMP Architecture Review Board (ARB) has released Version 5.0 of the OpenMP API Specification, a major upgrade of the OpenMP language. The OpenMP community has made many requests since version 4.5 was introduced in 2015. As a result OpenMP 5.0 adds many new features that will be useful for highly parallel and complex applications. OpenMP now covers the entire hardware spectrum from embedded and accelerator devices to multicore systems with shared-memory. Vendors have made reference implementations of parts of the standard, and user courses will soon be given at OpenMP workshops and major conferences. Read further...

Bright Computing, a provider of platform-independent cluster management software, has released version 8.2 of the Bright product portfolio with new capabilities for managing edge computing, improved workload accounting/reporting, and support for 64-bit ARMv8 processors. The new release will also come with PythonCM2 - an all-new way to interact with Bright Cluster Manager using Python - and features some big increases in performance. Imagine building a machine so advanced and precise you need a supercomputer to help design it. That's exactly what scientists and engineers in Germany did when building the Wendelstein 7-X experiment. The device, funded by the German federal and state governments and the European Union, is a type of fusion device called a stellarator. Some materials spontaneously emit light if they are excited by an external source, for instance a laser. This phenomenon is known as fluorescence. However, in several gases and quantum systems a much stronger emission of light can occur, when the emitters within an ensemble spontaneously synchronize their quantum mechanical phase with each other and act together when excited. In this way, the resulting light output can be much more intense than the sum of the individual emitters, leading to an ultrafast and bright emission of light - superfluorescence. Read further...

GW4, the Met Office and Cray Inc. announced that the Arm-based supercomputer in Europe, named "Isambard", is now live in the United Kingdom. It is the largest Arm-based system in the world outside of the U.S. and one of the first systems of its kind to be used for scientific research as well as to explore future computer architectures in the exascale era. Isambard is a Cray XC50 system with Marvell ThunderX2 processors based on the 64-bit ARMv8-A architecture and was designed by the GW4 Alliance in partnership with Cray and the Met Office.
