Focus

At the ISC'18 Conference in Frankfurt, Germany, Sergi Girona from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center expanded on EuroHPC, the exascale programme for Europe in the session on upcoming exascale systems. Analysing the TOP500 results, Sergi Gerona described the European Union as a union of states whereas the United States are united. Switzerland has the highest ranking supercomputer in Europe in the TOP500 list but Switzerland is not in the European Union, it is a so-called Associated Country. Therefore, in Europe there is a different mechanism to achieve objectives. Every country, every member state has its own organisation, its own objective and its own budget restrictions. This is an indication that Europe has to work together if it wants to achieve the objective of reaching exascale as well as a living HPC ecosystem not very late in the future. The top 10 machines in the TOP500 list also have European users in industry. They are clearly getting the message that they need this technology. This is already one objective that EuroHPC will be targeting to help industrial users move to exascale. Read further...

Atos, a global expert in digital transformation, has signed a new strategic partnership with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) on quantum computing and learning. As part of this strategic partnership, the DTU will be the first university in Denmark to use the Atos Quantum Learning Machine, capable of developing up to 41 Qubits (quantum bits). The DTU is joining several other leading international institutes, such as the US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the French University of Reims, and most recently the University of Applied Sciences in Upper Austria. Users get access to various technologies to perform quantum computations and learn the principles of quantum computing. Materials researchers analyse nanomaterials using a combination of experiments and computer simulations. Knowing the structure and electronic properties of nanomaterials is vital to their successful manufacture and application, because quantum mechanical effects play a considerable role in nanomaterials with only one or two dimensions. Compared with their three-dimensional relatives, such low-dimensional nanomaterials, therefore, have completely different and often surprising properties. Read further...

Mellanox Technologies Ltd., a supplier of high-performance, end-to-end interconnect solutions for data centre servers and storage systems, has launched an advanced and self-contained Ethernet Video Fabric (EVF) that accelerates the adoption of IP based broadcast technology. The platform combines innovative network automation and fully integrated, switch-based, open-source, containerized Registration and Discovery services, which automates the discovery and provisioning of IP based multimedia devices. The platform has been demonstrated at EBU NTS 2018 integrating Network Media Open Specification (NMOS IS-04) Registration & Discovery System (RDS) open source software developed by Sony to run as a containerized application on Mellanox Spectrum based 10G, 25G, 40G, 50G and 100G open Ethernet switches running the Mellanox Onyx network operating system. A $1.547 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) will fund a powerful new supercomputer for UC Santa Cruz researchers in fields ranging from astrophysics to climate science. Principal investigator Brant Robertson, an associate professor of astronomy and astrophysics, said he hopes to have the new high-performance computer system up and running by the end of the calendar year. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded the University of Vermont (UVM) a $1 million grant to significantly upgrade its Vermont Advanced Computing Core. Over the next few months, 72 high performance graphics processing units, or GPUs, will be added to the current VACC, housed in UVM's primary data centre in South Burlington, to create a new high performance cluster. Rolls-Royce has an engineering problem that needs a large-scale software solution. Solving that problem, however, requires a multi-team effort: Illinois' National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) delivers the scale courtesy of Blue Waters, its Cray XC supercomputer; Livermore Software Technology Corporation (LSTC) provides the software, LS-DYNA; and Cray contributes additional expertise to help ensure the software setup is optimal for the machine. By working together, these four players are creating a wide-reaching solution that no single player could achieve alone.
