Fujitsu will begin sales of its Fujitsu Server PRIMERGY Liquid Immersion Cooling System in Japan today, with a global roll-out to follow. This product is a cooling system designed to efficiently cool the entire IT devices equally by immersing it in cooling fluid. Large-scale cooling equipment is not required, so the system reduces the total power consumption for the server system as a whole by about 40% compared to existing air cooling systems. This dramatic reduction of power consumption allows customers to approximately double the server density in the same installation space. Read further...

A Big Data Center collaboration between computational scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) and engineers at Intel and Cray has yielded another first in the quest to apply deep learning to data-intensive science: CosmoFlow, the first large-scale science application to use the TensorFlow framework on a CPU-based high performance computing platform with synchronous training. It is also the first to process three-dimensional (3D) spatial data volumes at this scale, giving scientists an entirely new platform for gaining a deeper understanding of the universe. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has launched the Institute for Research and Innovation in Software for High-Energy Physics (IRIS-HEP). The $25 million software-focused institute will tackle the unprecedented torrent of data that will come from the high-luminosity running of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's most powerful particle accelerator located at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland. The High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) will provide scientists with a unique window into the subatomic world to search for new phenomena and to study the properties of the Higgs boson in great detail. The 2012 discovery at the LHC of the Higgs boson - a particle central to our fundamental theory of nature - led to the Nobel Prize in physics a year later and has provided scientists with a new tool for further discovery. By comparing observation results to simulation models, an international research team found that in many cases this explosion takes place inside a thick cloud of circumstellar matter shrouding the star. At the Baidu 2018 ABC Summit in Shanghai, Baidu and Intel outlined new artificial intelligence (AI) collaborations showcasing applications ranging from financial services and shipping to video content detection. Specifically, Baidu Cloud is leveraging Intel Xeon Scalable processors and the Intel Math Kernel Library-Deep Neural Network (Intel MKL-DNN) as part of a new financial services solution for leading China banks; the Intel OpenVINO toolkit in new AI edge distribution and video solutions; and Intel Optane technology and Intel QLC NAND SSD technology for enhanced object storage.
