Exascale supercomputing

To capture and control the process of fusion that powers the sun and stars in facilities on Earth called tokamaks, scientists must confront disruptions that can halt the reactions and damage the doughnut-shaped devices. Now an artificial intelligence system under development at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and Princeton University to predict and tame such disruptions has been selected as an Aurora Early Science project by the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility, a DOE Office of Science User Facility. On 29 August 2018, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and TNO signed a Letter of Intent to establish a new partnership: "Policy by Simulation". They join forces to get a better understanding of complex phenomena, and create innovations for various pressing problems - among which energy transition, public health and crime. Mellanox Technologies Ltd., a supplier of optical transceivers and high-performance, end-to-end smart interconnect solutions for data centre servers and storage systems, has begun shipping 200GbE Ethernet and InfiniBand HDR LinkXTMoptical transceivers, Active Optical Cables (AOCs) and Direct Attach Copper cables (DACs) for use in upcoming 200Gb/s systems. Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center's (PSC) groundbreaking Bridges supercomputer will provide value to the research community for an additional year, extending operations through November 2020, thanks to $1.9 million in added operational funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The new award, which will fund mostly staff positions, brings the total funding for Bridges to over $19 million. NSF awarded the original grant for Bridges to begin in December 2014. Read further...

Applications

In the weeks and months following a major earthquake, the surrounding area is often wracked by powerful aftershocks that can leave an already damaged community reeling and significantly hamper recovery efforts. While scientists have developed empirical laws, like Bäth's Law and Ohmori's Law, to describe the likely size and timing of those aftershocks, methods for forecasting their location have been harder to grasp. But sparked by a suggestion from researchers at Google, Brendan Meade, a Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, and Phoebe DeVries, a post-doctoral fellow working in his lab, are using artificial intelligence technology to try to get a handle on the problem. A $4.9 million award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) will fund a new Indiana University-led centre focused on protecting and securing U.S. research. The Research Security Operations Center, or ResearchSOC, is a virtual centre led by Indiana University (IU) and distributed across Indiana University, Duke University, the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and University of California San Diego. ResearchSOC will help provide the research and education community with the cybersecurity services, training and information sharing necessary to make scientific computing resilient to cyberattacks. In a multi-national collaborative study published inScience Advances, scientists from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), the University of Melbourne and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) found the record number of tropical cyclones that occurred over the North Atlantic in 2005 (28 storms) is close to the maximum number that might occur in this region given existing climate conditions.
