Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced that the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne's (EPFL) Blue Brain Project, a Swiss brain research initiative, selected HPE to build a next-generation supercomputer for modeling and simulation of the mammalian brain. The new supercomputer, called ‘Blue Brain 5’, will be dedicated to simulation neuroscience, in particular simulation-based research, analysis and visualization, to advance the understanding of the brain. NVIDIA and the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg have established a cooperation to support scientists and engineers in solving society’s most important challenges using artificial intelligence and high performance computing. A memorandum of understanding was signed today on behalf of NVIDIA, the leader in AI computing, and the Luxembourg Government by Jaap Zuiderveld, NVIDIA Vice President of Sales and Marketing, EMEA and India, and Luxembourg’s Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel. At CEBIT 2018, Huawei and the European Advanced Networking Test Center (EANTC), an internationally recognized independent test center, announced the following: With excellent test results in terms of zero packet loss, low latency, and high throughput, the Huawei AI Fabric Ultra-High-Speed Ethernet solution successfully passed EANTC's rigorous high-performance data center test, pioneering the ultra-high-speed network based on Ethernet. Replacing a cluster installed in 2012, Princeton’s new flagship computer, TIGER, arrived quietly on campus in March and was put through months of routine testing and debugging before being officially unveiled in late May. Researchers at Newcastle University are benefiting from a new HPC machine, called Rocket. Newcastle University has purchased a centralized HPC system to support all researchers across the University and replace existing departmental clusters as they come to end of life. The new HPC system is designed, integrated and configured by high performance compute, storage and data analytics integrator, OCF. The GPB2 million investment is funded by the University, supporting its dedication to providing world-class research facilities for its existing academics and attracting new researchers to the University. A Tokyo Institute of Technology research team has shown copper nitride acts as an n-type semiconductor, with p-type conduction provided by fluorine doping, utilizing a unique nitriding technique applicable for mass production and a computational search for appropriate doping elements, as well as atomically resolved microscopy and electronic structure analysis using synchrotron radiation. These n-type and p-type copper nitride semiconductors could potentially replace the conventional toxic or rare materials in photovoltaic cells. Read further...

The VWData research programme hosted an interactive workshop (break-out session) during the "We Make The City" Festival in Amsterdam, on Thursday 21 June 2018. The workshop dealt with “Algorithm Auditing” and focused on a project that the City of Amsterdam, KPMG and the University of Amsterdam are conducting. The goal is to enable law firms and practitioners – who are frequently overwhelmed by vast volumes of legislation and case law – to rapidly and efficiently query legal texts to aid decision-making and regulatory compliance. Taking advantage of magnetic resonance technology, the analyser rapidly identifies ore grade so that large volumes of waste rock (gangue) can be rejected before it enters the plant, significantly reducing the amount of energy and water needed for processing. The NOvA neutrino experiment, in collaboration with the Department of Energy’s Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC-4) program and the HEPCloud program at DOE’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, was able to perform the largest-scale analysis ever to support the recent evidence of antineutrino oscillation, a phenomenon that may hold clues to how our universe evolved. Using Cori, the newest supercomputer at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), located at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, NOvA used over 1 million computing cores, or CPUs, between May 14 and 15 and over a short timeframe one week later.
