It is already over two decades ago since there were European supercomputers based on European processor technology: the transputer. One of the persons that worked with transputers, Klaus Kinzinger, is now leading a consortium, JESI, that not only wants to revive these days, but put Europe in the secure HPC driver's seat. We talked with Klaus Kinzinger about how the consortium intends to achieve that, and how it relates and compares to other initiatives like EuroHPC and the European Processor Initiative. Quantum computing

Intel researchers are taking new steps toward quantum computers by testing a tiny new "spin qubit" chip. The new chip was created in Intel's D1D Fab in Oregon using the same silicon manufacturing techniques that the company has perfected for creating billions of traditional computer chips. Smaller than a pencil's eraser, it is the tiniest quantum computing chip Intel has made. Read further...
For the first time, Volkswagen experts succeeded in simulating industrially relevant molecules using a quantum computer. This is especially important for the development of high-performance electric vehicle batteries, as the experts have successfully simulated molecules such as lithium-hydrogen and carbon chains. Now they are working on more complex chemical compounds. In the long term, they want to simulate the chemical structure of a complete electric vehicle battery on a quantum computer. Their objective is to develop a "tailor-made battery", which will be a configurable chemical blueprint that is ready for production. Volkswagen has presented its research work connected with quantum computing at the CEBIT technology show in Hannover, Germany. Read further...
Researchers at QuTech in Delft have succeeded in generating quantum entanglement between two quantum chips faster than the entanglement is lost. Entanglement - once referred to by Einstein as 'spooky action' - forms the link that will provide a future quantum internet its power and fundamental security. This opens the door to connect multiple quantum nodes and create the very first quantum network in the world. They published their results on 14 June inNature. Read further...
Data transmission is the backbone of the modern information society, on both the large and small scale. On the internet, data are exchanged between computers all over the world, most often using fibre optic cables. Inside a computer, on the other hand, information has to be shuttled back and forth between different processors. A reliable exchange of data is also of great importance for the new quantum information technologies that are currently being developed - but at the same time it is also fiendishly difficult. At the ETH in Zurich, a team of physicists led by Andreas Wallraff of the Laboratory for Solid State Physics has now succeeded in transmitting quantum information, at the push of button and with high fidelity, between two quantum bits roughly a metre apart. Their results are published in the scientific journalNature. Read further...
