During the recent e-IRG Open Workshop in Sofia, Bulgaria, Dr. Peter Bauer, Deputy Director of Research at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), gave a talk on the need for co-design in supercomputers for weather prediction. Exascale supercomputing

Even after the direct measurement of their gravitational waves, there are still mysteries surrounding black holes. What happens when two black holes merge, or when stars collide with a black hole? This has now been simulated by researchers from Goethe University Frankfurt and the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS) using a novel numerical method. The simulation code "ExaHyPE" is designed in such a way that it will be able to calculate gravitational waves on the future generation of "exascale" supercomputers. Read further...

Quantum computing

Quantum computers promise to lead to major advances in certain areas of complex computing. One of the roadblocks to achieving such dream computers, however, is the fact that quantum phenomena, which take place at the level of atomic particles, can be severely affected by environmental "noise" from their surroundings. In the past, scientists have tried to maintain the coherence of the systems by cooling them to very low temperatures, for example, but challenges remain. Now, in research published inNature Communications, scientists from the RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science and collaborators have shown, with a three-particle system, that they can use dephasing - a process that normally would reduce the coherence - to paradoxically maintain it. This will allow our country to use the possibilities for computing the highest-capacity data", stated G. Viliunas, Vice-Minister of Education and Science. Lithuanian science and business will be able to use world-class supercomputers for large-scale calculations in areas such as health, climate change, industry, cyber security, energy, artificial intelligence, and economic forecasts. The CRESCO6 supercomputer has been inaugurated at the ENEA Research Center in Portici, near Naples. It is the most powerful computing infrastructure in the South of Italy and of absolute relevance in the entire Italian scientific panorama thanks to a computational capacity of 700 thousand billion mathematical operations per second (700TeraFlops). The inauguration was also attended by Professor Jack Dongarra of the University of Tennessee, one of the world's leading supercomputing experts, as well as leading Italian companies such as Eni and Avio. Physicists at the University of Zurich (UZH) are researching a new class of materials: Higher-order topological insulators. The edges of these crystalline solids conduct electric current without dissipation, while the rest of the crystal remains insulating. The second FED4SAE call for industrial projects is now open. CEA-Leti, coordinator of the pan-European consortium FED4SAE, has announced that the 14 partners are continuing their support for European start-ups, small/medium enterprises (SMEs) and midcaps with the second open call for application experiments. Proposals for innovative cyber-physical system (CPS) and embedded system projects can be submitted from May 29, 2018. Experiments that measure the lifetime of neutrons reveal a perplexing and unresolved discrepancy. While this lifetime has been measured to a precision within 1 percent using different techniques, apparent conflicts in the measurements offer the exciting possibility of learning about as-yet undiscovered physics. A neutron "lives" for almost 15 minutes before it decays. The elementary particles remain stable as long as they are in the atomic nuclei. In isolation, however, they decay after just under 15 minutes into other particles - protons, electrons, and antineutrinos. To determine the lifetime of the neutrons, scientists observe either the emergence of these decay products or the disappearance of the neutrons. However, these two varying experiments deliver different results. The deviation is less than nine seconds. This might not appear to be much, but the conflicts between the experimental measurements could answer key questions about a new physics beyond the known particles and processes in the universe.
