Atos CEO Thierry Breton gave a keynote at the EuroHPC Conference in Sofia, stressing the importance of a European microprocessor that can be used in Edge computing in, for instance, the automotive industry and in the EuroHPC exascale systems. It is crucial for Europe to regain its sovereignty in this area. Next is a slightly edited, for readability, version of his presentation. Read further...

Exascale supercomputing

A new Earth-modelling system unveiled today will have weather-scale resolution and use advanced computers to simulate aspects of Earth's variability and anticipate decadal changes that will critically impact the US energy sector in coming years. Read further...

Quantum computing

The elusive quantum mechanical phenomenon called entanglement has now been made a reality in objects almost macroscopic in size. Results published inNatureshow how two vibrating drumheads, the width of a human hair, can display the spooky action. Read further...
Yale's latest work expanding the reach of quantum information science is actually a game of quantum pitch and catch. Read further...

Focus on Europe

Early registration at reduced rates is now open for ISC High Performance, the largest high performance computing forum in Europe. By registering between now and May 16 for the full conference pass, attendees can save over 45 percent off the onsite registration rates. Read further...
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has installed a new supercomputer at KU Leuven, a Flemish research university consistently ranked as one of the five most innovative universities in the world. HPE collaborated with KU Leuven to develop and deploy Genius, a new supercomputer built to run artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. The system will be available to both academia and the industry to build applications that drive scientific breakthroughs, economic growth and innovation in Flanders, the northern region of Belgium. Read further...
The UK's fastest academic supercomputer, based at the University of Cambridge, will be made available to artificial intelligence (AI) technology companies from across the UK, in support of the government's industrial strategy. Read further...

Middleware

Big, impactful science requires a whole technological ecosystem to progress. This includes cutting-edge computing systems, high-capacity storage, high-speed networks, power, cooling: the list goes on and on. Critically, it also requires state-of-the-art software: programmes that work together seamlessly to allow scientists and engineers to answer tough questions, share their solutions, and conduct research with the maximum efficiency and the minimum pain. Read further...

Hardware

DataDirect Networks (DDN) continues to expand its leadership among the sites surveyed annually by Intersect360. With 16.7 percent of total share, DDN has widened the gap between itself and the second largest supplier and 2017 represents the fourth straight year DDN has led the market. Intersect360's report, "The Top of All Things in HPC, 2017 Site Census Snapshot Analysis", identifies the suppliers, packages, or categories within specific HPC market segments. Read further...
Asetek has received confirmation of an award from new OEM partner Quanta Computer of Taoyuan, Taiwan, for the National Center for High-Performance Computing (NCHC) in Hsinchu. The new cluster will focus on artificial intelligence (AI), and will be the largest supercomputer in Taiwan when commissioned. Read further...
Mellanox Technologies Ltd.'s CEO and President Mr. Eyal Waldman has been recognized as a "Global Industry Leader" due to his immense contribution, vision and long term positive impact on the industry, including establishing Mellanox as a global expert in the data centre interconnect market. A new material created by Oregon State University (OSU) researchers is a key step toward the next generation of supercomputers. Those "quantum computers" will be able to solve problems well beyond the reach of existing computers while working much faster and consuming vastly less energy. Read further...

Applications

In recent years, researchers have firmly established that gene mutations appearing for the first time, called de novo mutations, contribute to approximately one-third of cases of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In a new study, an international team led by scientists at University of California San Diego School of Medicine have identified a culprit that may explain some of the remaining risk: rare inherited variants in regions of non-coding DNA. Read further...
Every two and a half hours, a new wind turbine rises in the U.S. In 2016, wind provided 5.6 percent of all electricity produced, more than double the amount generated by wind in 2010, but still a far cry from its potential. A team of researchers from the University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) has developed a new way to extract more power from the wind. This approach has the potential to increase wind power generation significantly with a consequent increase in revenue. Numerical simulations performed at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) indicate potential increases of up to six to seven percent. Read further...
Corn and soybean fields look similar from space - at least they used to. But now, scientists have proven a new technique for distinguishing the two crops using satellite data and the processing power of supercomputers. Read further...
The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has named Faculty Fellowship awardees for 2018-2019. These six Illinois faculty members will work with NCSA to investigate a wide array of subjects including cancer, agriculture, cinema, economics, civil infrastructure and more. Each faculty member will work closely with experts at NCSA on a project that aligns with research focus areas and/or major projects, i.e. the Blue Waters project, XSEDE, the Midwest Big Data Hub, and Industry programme. In even the most fuel-efficient cars, about 60 percent of the total energy of gasoline is lost through heat in the exhaust pipe and radiator. To combat this, researchers are developing new thermo-electic materials that can convert heat into electricity. These semiconducting materials could recirculate electricity back into the vehicle and improve fuel efficiency by up to 5 percent. Read further...
