The Tuesday address on June 26 will be presented by Dr. Keren Bergman, Charles Batchelor Professor of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University, who will talk about some of the latest developments in silicon photonics. The Wednesday keynote will be delivered by Prof. Dr. Thomas Sterling, Professor of Informatics & Computing, School of Informatics & Computing and Director, Center for Research in Extreme Scale Technologies (CREST) at Indiana University, who will provide his perspective on recent developments in HPC. Paderborn University has selected a Cray CS500 cluster system as its next-generation supercomputer. This procurement is the first phase of the Noctua project in which a multi-petaflop-system with a total budget of 10 million euro. The initial high-performance computing (HPC) system provides academic researchers from Paderborn University and nationwide with computing resources primarily for computational material science, opto-electronics and photonics, and computer system research. Royal Philips, a global expert in health technology, together with its consortium partners, has received funding from the EU's Horizon 2020 programme to pilot Big Data solutions to achieve better patient outcomes in health care at a lower cost. The three-year programme is the largest EU-funded initiative to transform the region's health care sector through the use of Big Data. The 'BigMedilytics' programme aims to improve patient outcomes and increase productivity in the health sector by applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to complex datasets across the data value chain. NVIDIA and Arm are partnering to bring deep learning inferencing to the billions of mobile, consumer electronics and Internet of Things devices that will enter the global marketplace. ANSYS, a global expert and innovator of engineering simulation software, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire OPTIS, a premier provider of software for scientific simulation of light, human vision and physics-based visualization. The acquisition of OPTIS will extend ANSYS' industry-leading multiphysics-based portfolio into the increasingly important area of optical simulation. Fiber-optic cables crisscross the globe and package everything from financial data to cat videos into light. But when the signal arrives at your local data centre, it runs into a silicon bottleneck. Instead of light, computers run on electrons moving through silicon-based chips - which, despite huge advances, are still less efficient than photonics. To break through, scientists are trying to integrate photonics into silicon devices, and have been developing lasers that work seamlessly on silicon. In 1996, when a computer won a match against the then reigning world chess champion Garry Kasparov, it was nothing short of a sensation. After this breakthrough in the world of chess, the board game Go was long considered to be a bastion reserved for human players due to its complexity. Nowadays, however, the world's best players no longer have any chance of winning against the "AlphaGo" software. The recipe for the success of this computer programme is made possible through a combination of the so-called Monte Carlo Tree Search and deep neural networks based on machine learning and artificial intelligence. A team of researchers from the University of Muenster in Germany has now demonstrated that this combination is extremely well suited to planning chemical syntheses - so-called retrosyntheses - with unprecedented efficiency. The Linux Foundation has announced expanded industry support, along with Intel Corporation's commitment to open source major components of its Wind River Titanium Cloud portfolio of technologies and the Intel Network Edge Virtualization Software Development Kit (Intel NEV SDK). These production quality components from Intel Corporation will be contributed to Akraino Edge Stack, the open source community creating an open source software stack that supports high-availability Cloud services optimized for edge computing systems and applications.
