Exascale supercomputing

An international group of researchers has made a decisive step towards creating the technology to achieve simulations of brain-scale networks on future supercomputers of the exascale class. The breakthrough, published inFrontiers in Neuroinformatics, allows larger parts of the human brain to be represented, using the same amount of computer memory. Simultaneously, the new algorithm significantly speeds up brain simulations on existing supercomputers. Read further...

Google has presented Bristlecone, a new quantum processor, at the annual American Physical Society meeting in Los Angeles. The purpose of this gate-based superconducting system is to provide a testbed for research into system error rates and scalability of our qubit technology, as well as applications in quantum simulation, optimization, and machine learning. The unique Australian approach of creating quantum bits from precisely positioned individual atoms in silicon is reaping major rewards, with University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney-led scientists showing for the first time that they can make two of these atom qubits 'talk' to each other. The team - led by UNSW Professor Michelle Simmons, Director of the Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology, or CQC2T - is the only group in the world that has the ability to see the exact position of their qubits in the solid state. Now a team of researchers from the University of Bristol, Peking University, Technical University of Denmark, ICFO Spain, PAS, University of Copenhagen and Dr. Jordi Tura from the Theory Division at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics has developed a large-scale integrated silicon-photonics quantum circuit for the precise and general control of multidimensional entanglement. Samsung and HSE Laboratory will develop mechanisms of Bayesian inference in modern neural networks, which will solve a number of problems in deep learning. The laboratory team will be made up of the members of the Bayesian Methods Research Group - one of the strongest scientific groups in Russia in the field of machine learning and Bayesian inference. The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy is granting Asperitas and EcoRacks a so called Demonstration Energy Innovation (DEI) grant for the super energy efficient and first Immersed Computing data centre project in The Netherlands.
