During the annual SURFsara Super D Event on December 12, 2017 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands,Primeur Magazinehad a conversation with Thomas Skordas, who is responsible for the EuroHPC strategic initiative. Thomas Skordas is Director of "Digital Excellence and Science Infrastructures" of the European Commission's Directorate in DG Connect. This Directorate is promoting and funding research infrastructures and excellent research in Europe. Part of the research infrastructures that the European Commission (EC) is funding, is directly related to creating a large-scale high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure for Europe for the benefit of European scientists, industry, and the public sector. The EuroHPC initiative has been proposed by the EC in order to create an excellent HPC infrastructure that European scientists and industry need in the area of high-performance computing and enabling science and user applications. Exascale supercomputing

Two years ago, experts in the HPC4E consortium aimed to move beyond the state of the art in HPC simulations required for different sources of energy: Oil & Gas, Wind and Biogas combustion. After two years of joint European and Brazilian research, HPC4E has published a detailed summary with conclusions in the position paper titled "Whitepaper about the use of Exascale computers in Oil & Gas, Wind Energy and Biogas Combustion industries". The use of new Exascale architectures and the corresponding advances in codes to fully exploit new chip capabilities will help address challenges for combustion technologies, wind power generation and hydrocarbon exploration, allowing a transition to greener and more advanced energy systems based on alternative fuels combined with renewable energy technologies. The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science User Facility, is now accepting proposals for data science and machine learning projects for its Aurora Early Science Programme (ESP). The deadline to apply is April 8, 2018. The ALCF is seeking proposals for data and learning projects to help prepare for Aurora, the USA's first exascale system scheduled for delivery in 2021. Quantum computing

Dr. Giulio Chiribella, an associate professor at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), received the Senior Research Fellowship 2018-19 by the Croucher Foundation. Three scholars were awarded Senior Research Fellowships this year, two were from HKU. Dr. Giulio Chiribella is a leading expert of quantum information science and of the foundations of quantum mechanics. He investigates the counterintuitive laws of the quantum world and how they can be turned into working principles for future information technologies. Read further...
An international group of researchers, including University of Amsterdam (UvA) physicist Michael Walter, have devised new methods to create interesting input states for quantum computations and simulations. The new methods can be used to simulate certain electronic systems to arbitrarily high accuracy. The results were published in the leading journalPhysical Review X. Read further...

Focus on Europe

Eni has launched its new HPC4 supercomputer, at its Green Data Center in Ferrera Erbognone, 60 km away from Milan. HPC4 quadruples the company's computing power and makes it the world's most powerful industrial system. HPC4 has a peak performance of 18.6 Petaflops which, combined with the supercomputing system already in operation (HPC3), increases Eni's computational peak capacity to 22,4 Petaflops. ONERA has a new supercomputer, called SATOR. SATOR is a parallel scalar cluster of 17,360 compute cores provided by NEC that is the constructor. It was opened to production in September 2017 and offers, especially to aerodynamic engineers, operational power up to 4 to 5 times more than that of the previous cluster. Read further...
Atos has signed a contract to deliver its latest supercomputer, the 'BullSequana X1000', to Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany. The 12-petaflop machine will be Germany’s fastest supercomputer and one the most powerful computers in the world. Read further...

Cray Inc. has announced selected preliminary 2017 financial results. The 2017 anticipated results are based on preliminary financial data and are subject to change until the year-end financial reporting process is complete. As part of a $67 million contract with Cray to update its supercomputing facilities and systems, the Ministry of Earth Sciences in India has deployed two Cray XC40 supercomputers and two Cray ClusterStor storage systems. The combined systems are the largest supercomputing resource in India, and extend Cray's leadership position in the weather forecasting and climate research communities. Read further...

Asperitas has created a business unit to group their current innovation projects and stimulate new projects related to circular energy. The new business unit is being labeled as Asperitas Energy Innovation, AsperitasEI. According to Asperitas this is the time to think beyond energy efficiency measures for data centres alone and develop concepts where data centres are truly integrated within smart energy infrastructure. Asperitas is collaborating with several energy industry players, cleantech start-ups and city officials on circular energy innovation and will group these activities under the newly established unit AsperitasEI. CSRA Inc. has acquired another compute expansion under its High Performance Computing (HPC) contract with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). Distinguished scientist and professor Andrew McCallum, director of the Center for Data Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will lead a new partnership with the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to accelerate science and medicine. The goal of this project, called Computable Knowledge, is to create an intelligent and navigable map of scientific knowledge using a branch of artificial intelligence known as knowledge representation and reasoning. Using the power of Japan's K computer, scientists from the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science and collaborators have shown that incorporating satellite data at frequent intervals - 10 minutes in the case of this study - into weather prediction models can significantly improve the rainfall predictions of the models and allow more precise predictions of the rapid development of a typhoon. The conference aims to launch a multi-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder effort to address the challenges of AI ethics within a societal context. Science Europe launches a framework for research data management protocols that scientific communities can use to set up domain-specific protocols as templates for researchers within their field. The Cloud

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) will lead a $27.5 million Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) initiative to build more intelligence into computer networks. Researchers from six U.S. universities will collaborate in the CONIX Research Center headquartered at Carnegie Mellon. For the next five years, CONIX will create the architecture for networked computing that lies between edge devices and the Cloud. The challenge is to build this substrate so that future applications that are crucial to IoT can be hosted with performance, security, robustness, and privacy guarantees. Read further...
