During the Atos Tech Days in Brussels, Belgium, in July 2017,Primeur Magazinewas able to talk to Arnaud Bertrand who is in charge of the Big Data within Atos, about the company's Quantum Learning Machine. His responsibilities include the mainframes, the x86 servers, HPC and all the work that is done around Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and professional services linked to all those subjects. Atos introduced the Quantum Learning Machine on July 4, 2017. The Quantum Learning Machine is a simulator of a general-purpose computer. Read further...

Crowd computing

"We're geeks, and we're motivated." That's how Amin Amooie, a doctoral student in earth sciences at the Ohio State University, explained his team's efforts to build the supercomputer they've dubbed "Buckeye Pi". They are just learning how to write computer code for scientific simulations, he said, so it doesn't make sense to test their code on full-scale academic supercomputers. At the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Intel announced two major milestones in its efforts to research and develop future computing technologies including quantum and neuromorphic computing, which have the potential to help industries, research institutions and society solve problems that currently overwhelm today's classical computers. A method of securely communicating between multiple quantum devices has been developed by a University College London (UCL)-led team of scientists, bringing forward the reality of a large-scale, un-hackable quantum network. Read further...

The European Commission unveiled today its plans to invest jointly with the Member States in building a world-class European supercomputers infrastructure, confirming its commitment to EuroHPC. Today's step is crucial for the European Union's competitiveness and independence in the data economy, says the Commission. Today, European scientists and industry increasingly process their data outside the EU because their needs are not matched by the computation time or computer performance available in the EU. This lack of independence threatens privacy, data protection, commercial trade secrets, and ownership of data in particular for sensitive applications. Read further...
The European High-Perfomance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) will pool European resources to develop top-of-the-range exascale supercomputers for processing big data, based on competitive European technology. Read further...
"This is one of the really important moments that can change the future", said Carlos Moedas at the EuroHPC press conference in Brussels announcing European supercomputer plans. "It is also probably one of the greatest examples that we have of European added value. What we are doing here with supercomputers is doing what others could not do alone." Read further...
"The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking will allow us to build a pan-European infrastructure of High-Performance Computers. Through EuroHPC, we want to align national interest, industrial interests, scientific interests, all around one single project", said European Commissioner Mariya Gabriel at a EuroHPC press conference in Brussels. "First of all to finance competitive European HPC technology. Furthermore, we want to build jointly the pre-exascale infrastructure which will be amongst the most advanced in the world. The Ministry of Economy in Luxembourg has announced that the seat of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking announced earlier today in Brussels will be in Luxembourg. The ministry expects its establishment in the second half of 2018. Luxembourg was one of the initial countries signing the EuroHPC declaration. It also was involved in the IPCEI HPC endeavour. Part of the European Commission that is involved in HPC and supercomputing has been moved from Brussels to Luxembourg over the past years. Read further...
Early-stage postgraduate and late-stage undergraduate students are invited to apply for the PRACE Summer of HPC 2018 programme, to be held in July and August 2018. Consisting of a training week and two months on placement at top HPC centres around Europe, the programme offers participants the opportunity to learn and share more about PRACE and HPC, and includes accommodation, a stipend and travel to their HPC centre. The Portuguese Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, and the Spanish Secretary of State of Research, Development and Innovation, Carmen Vela, have visited the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) on January 12, 2018 to preside over the agreement to jointly collaborate towards the creation and set-up of the Minho Advanced Computing Center (MACC) and of the Air Centre Data Intelligence Network (AIR_DataNet). The agreement will be signed by BSC, the Foundation for Science and Technology of Portugal (FCT) and the University of Minho. Read further...

An Immersed Computing AIC24 module has been deployed in a TIER IV data centre environment to function as a showcase for the French market. The internet of things (IoT) is coming, that much we know. But still it won't; not until we have components and chips that can handle the explosion of data that comes with IoT. In 2020, there will already be 50 billion industrial internet sensors in place all around us. NVIDIA has unveiled details of its functional safety architecture for NVIDIA DRIVE, its AI autonomous vehicle platform, which uses redundant and diverse functions to enable vehicles to operate safely, even in the event of faults related to the operator, environment or systems.
