The OpenAIRE datathon started on 30 November 2017 and will take place until the end of February 2018. The purpose of the datathon is to encourage developers and data scientists to analyse the OpenAIRE Information Space and improve its user base and third-party services. The OpenAIRE information space consists of a scholarly communication graph interlinking publications, datasets, software, research organisations, funders, and projects. The graph is the result of harvesting and harmonising metadata from about 3000 data providers and counts around 60 million objects. Read further...
On behalf of the HPC User Forum Steering Committee, Hyperion Research, CEA and Teratec are inviting interested parties to attend the next and 70th HPC User Forum meeting in Europe. It will be held on March 6-7, 2018, midday to midday, in the Très Grand Centre de Calcul du CEA (TGCC) on the Teratec campus in Bruyères-le-Châtel, France, close to Paris. Registration is free of charge and meals and local transportation will also be provided at no cost. Read further...
Europe is complex. Governance and research at a European level is complex. But we made it a little bit easier to understand on the EuroHPC site maintained by thePrimeur Magazineteam. We reorganised the site and added a section on "How European Research is organised". It includes some information on the current European HPC programmes and governance structures ideas. We already had a section on currently funded projects. Read further...
Two newly-discovered security flaws in computer processors, named Meltdown and Spectre, could allow unauthorised users to gain direct access to the heart of computer systems and steal personal data. The vulnerabilities were discovered by an international research team, in which Graz University of Technology's Institute of Applied Information Processing and Communications at the TU Graz, Austria, played a central role. The EU's European Research Council (ERC) has been supporting this research project since 2016, to the tune of two-million euro. Read further...
In 2008, the Gauß-Allianz e.V. united the leading German high performance computer centres into a strong network of interests and services. Although the University of Paderborn is a founding member of the Alliance, it was so far only associate member. For a proper membership, the federal and statewide funding of the Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing (PC²), which has been acquired so far, was not sufficient as an executing university institute for high-performance computing (HPC). The Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science, in partnership with the European Commission, will host the 2018 Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU Flagship conference "Research Infrastructures beyond 2020 - sustainable and effective ecosystem for science and society". On 22-23 March 2018, the event will gather around 300 participants and more than 30 high-level speakers to Sofia Tech Park, the innovation and digital hub of Bulgaria's capital. Read further...
The 4th International Conference on Research Infrastructures - ICRI 2018 will take place in Vienna, Austria, on 12-14 September 2018. ICRI 2018 will be co-organised by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (BMWFW) and the European Commission. Read further...

The ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge 2018 (ASC18) officially kicked off at the Supercomputing Conference 2017 (SC17). The registration is now open to university students from around the world. ASC Challenge is the world's largest student supercomputing competition, drawing thousands of university students to participate since being inaugurated 6 years ago. The ASC17 saw 230 university teams join the challenge, with 20 teams moving on to the finals. The finals of this tournament was held at the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi, China, home to the world's fastest supercomputer, Taihu Light. Read further...
In many two-dimensional (2D) materials, electrons not only possess charge and spin, but further exhibits an unusual quantum feature known as "valley". Simply speaking, electrons residing in many 2D materials can live in well-separated energy minima, and the "address" describing which minima these electrons belong to is known as "valley". The use of this "valley address" to encode and process information forms the core of a new vibrant research field known as "valleytronics". Read further...
The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has announced that the 2018 Charles Stark Draper Prize for Engineering will be awarded to Bjarne Stroustrup 'for conceptualizing and developing the C++ programming language'. The $500,000 annual award is given to engineers whose accomplishments have significantly benefited society. Read further...

Attempts to eradicate cancer are often compared to a "moonshot" - the successful effort that sent the first astronauts to the moon. But imagine if, instead of Newton's second law of motion, which describes the relationship between an object's mass and the amount of force needed to accelerate it, we only had reams of data related to throwing various objects into the air.
