Quantum computing

A quantum information scientist from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has developed efficient 'toolboxes' comprising theoretical tools and protocols for quantifying the security of high-speed quantum communication. Assistant Professor Charles Lim is part of an international team of experimental and theoretical scientists from Duke University, Ohio State University and Oak Ridge National Laboratory that has recently achieved a significant breakthrough in high-rate quantum secure communication. The EUDAT Collaborative Data Infrastructure (CDI) has appointed Per Öster, Director of Research Infrastructures at CSC - IT Center for Science, to lead the EOSC-Hub project as Project Director. Researchers and industry specialists across Europe, led by Harry Buhrman, director of QuSoft, group leader at CWI, and professor at the University of Amsterdam, have launched a Quantum Software Manifesto. In order to improve parallel processing of Big Data, the project "Evolutionary changes in Distributed Analysis" (ECiDA) was granted by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), within their Commit2Data programme. The research partners in this new project - CWI being one of them - will develop a platform to support 'evolving data-intensive application pipelines', making Big Data analysis safer, better, faster and adaptable in real-time. Commit2Data is a national public-private research and innovation programme focusing on data science and technology relevant for the Dutch top sectors, to maintain and strengthen the Dutch top 5 position in Big Data. Higher education in the Netherlands is highly ranked. In the World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Index 2016–2017, it was ranked third after Singapore and Finland. Moreover, Dutch universities as a group have done very well in global university rankings. All thirteen publicly funded research universities made it to top 200 in the World University Rankings 2018. DataDirect Networks (DDN) has issued the results of its annual High Performance Computing (HPC) Trends survey, which reflects the continued adoption of flash-based storage as essential to respondent's overall data centre strategy. While flash is deemed essential, respondents anticipate needing additional technology innovations to unlock the full performance of their HPC applications. A supercomputer that can perform more than 250 trillion calculations per second is powering the University of Oregon's leap into data science as the heart of a new $2.2 million Research Advanced Computing Services (RACS) facility. Known as Talapas, the powerhouse mainframe is one of the fastest academic supercomputers in the Northwest. AMD has launched the first public Cloud instances powered by the AMD EPYC processor. Microsoft Azure has deployed AMD EPYC processors in its data centres in advance of preview for its latest L-Series of Virtual Machines (VM) for storage optimized workloads.
