A future quantum computer, using "quantum bits" or qubits, might be able to solve problems which are not tractable for classical computers. Scientists are currently struggling to build devices with more than a few qubits, with the challenge arising that the qubits mutually hamper each other's proper operation. Researchers led by Professor Ferdinand Schmidt-Kaler und Dr. Ulrich Poschinger at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) in Germany have now demonstrated the operation of a four-qubit register comprised of atomic ions trapped in microchip trap. On October 26, 2017, the European Commission has made available the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Declaration to all scientific stakeholders, for their endorsement and commitments to the realisation of the EOSC by 2020. The Declaration emerged from the EOSC Summit of 12 June, where more than 80 key scientific stakeholders showed a strong sense of commitment, dedication and intellectual rigour with respect to the implementation of the EOSC. The second module of JURECA is as large as an entire supercomputer: the booster is accommodated across 33 cabinets in the computer hall of the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC). The expansion, developed by Intel and the JSC in cooperation with Dell EMC and ParTec to massively increase the available computing power, is directly connected to the first module, the cluster, which was supplied by T-Platforms in 2015. Thanks to the additional 5 petaflop/second - equivalent to 5 billion computing operations per second - the Jülich supercomputer now appears as one of the fastest computers in Europe on the TOP500 list of the fastest computers in the world, the current version of which has been published on November 13, 2017. The university uses this 350-node cluster to optimize efficiency for researchers working on groundbreaking discoveries in a variety of domains including material science, engineering, chemistry, and physics. Inspur, a data centre and Cloud computing total solutions provider, has introduced its new ON5263M5 compute node, which has received OCP-accepted certification from the Open Compute Project (OCP) and is now listed on OCP Marketplace. Fujitsu has selected InfiniBand solutions for the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology's (AIST) AI Bridging Cloud Infrastructure (ABCI) supercomputer, the fastest supercomputers in Japan, and world's first large-scale open Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure. The ABCI will be deployed by Fujitsu at the University of Tokyo and is scheduled to begin operations in the second quarter of 2018. The dual EDR 100G InfiniBand network, will provide an aggregated data throughput of 200Gb/s, connecting the Fujitsu PRIMERGY servers, including multiple NVIDIA GPUs and NVMe storage. Physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have come up with a way to link a group of atoms' quantum mechanical properties among themselves far more quickly than is currently possible, potentially providing a tool for highly precise sensing and quantum computer applications. The fiftieth TOP500 list of the fastest supercomputers in the world has China overtaking the US in the total number of ranked systems by a margin of 202 to 143.
