During the Workshops Day at ISC'17 in Frankfurt, Germany,Primeur Magazinewas able to talk to Guy Lonsdale from Scapos at the occasion of the ETP4HPC Workshop. Scapos is a spin-off company from Fraunhofer. This SME company was set up to do marketing and sales of high tech products from Fraunhofer but Scapos also works with other SMEs and multiple Fraunhofer institutes. The company has some products in the HPC arena such as highly scalable algorithm multigrid, linear solvers, support for multi-physics co-simulation, and programming layers like GPI, which is a GASPI implementation for PGAS or the LAMA library which supports easy programming across heterogeneous systems. So, it takes a lot of the details away from the applications. Read further...
The ETP4HPC Workshop at ISC'17 in Frankfurt, Germany providedPrimeur Magazinewith an excellent occasion to interview Martin Palkovic from IT4Innovations, the National Supercomputing Centre in the Czech Republic. IT4Innovations is both serving as a cycle provider, distributing cycles to mostly Czech academia but also industry, and as an expertise provider, helping the customers, either from academia or industry, with HPC. IT4Innovations is also involved in education and R&D. The Centre has 80 full-time equivalents in R&D. It is participating in several European projects. IT4Innovations is also part of PRACE as the Czech representative and member of ETP4HPC. To Martin Palkovic's knowledge, IT4Innovations is the only Intel Parallel Computing Center in the new Member States of the European Union. IT4Innovations is also part of SesameNet, which is one of the Coordination and Support Actions (CSA) in the Horizon2020 Programme. Read further...

Mellanox Technologies Ltd., a supplier of high-performance, end-to-end smart interconnect solutions for data centre servers and storage systems, has made available storage reference platforms based on its revolutionary BlueField System-on-Chip (SoC), combining a programmable multicore CPU, networking, storage, security, and virtualization acceleration engines into a single, highly integrated device. Read further...
Solarflare, a pioneer in the development of neural-class networks, has demonstrated the world's first NVMe over fabric based on TCP, along with Samsung Semiconductor Inc. and Supermicro. TCP promises to open the market for NVMe over fabrics by leveraging the native Ethernet transport, without requiring the deployment of network protocols such as data center bridging (DCB), iWARP or RoCE. NVMe over TCP uses Ethernet to provide IT organisations with the same high bandwidth, low latency performance as iWARP and RoCE, but over a familiar transport deployed in 90% of the 100 million Ethernet ports shipped into their data centres each year. Solarflare XtremeScale NICs with NVMe over TCP support will be commercially available on September 30, 2017. Read further...
Super Micro Computer Inc., a global expert in computing, storage, and networking technologies and green computing, has showcased its petabyte scale all-flash Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) system at Flash Memory Summit at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, California from August 8th through August 10th, 2017. Read further...
Micron Technology Inc. has introduced Micron 9200 Series of NVMe SSDs, the company's latest flagship performance solid-state storage family. The innovative architecture and industry leading performance of Micron 9200 SSDs allows organisations to access data faster and stay one step ahead of the growing diversity of business-critical workloads and surging data demands. Multiplexing, the ability to send multiple signals through a single channel, is a fundamental feature of any voice or data communication system. An international research team has demonstrated for the first time a method for multiplexing data carried on terahertz waves, high-frequency radiation that may enable the next generation of ultra-high bandwidth wireless networks. Read further...
Cavium Inc., a provider of semiconductor products that enable secure and intelligent processing for enterprise, data centre, Cloud, wired and wireless networking, announces support for the newly ratified NVMe over Fibre Channel (FC-NVMe) 1.0 standard. Cavium's industry-leading QLogic 2700 series Gen 6 and 2690 Series Enhanced Gen 5 Fibre Channel host bus adapters (HBAs) support connecting NVMe storage over Fibre Channel networks concurrently with the existing storage by using the updated firmware and drivers. Read further...

Each year, projects at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) - a US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science User Facility located at DOE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) - are awarded computing hours through the DOE Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research Leadership Computing Challenge (ALCC). The projects selected are aligned with ALCC's mission to provide computing resources to high-risk, high-return simulations within energy-related areas of study. Read further...
Machine learning scientists at Disney Research have developed a new innovative model that uncovers how the meanings of words change over time. Dr. Robert Bamler and Dr. Stephan Mandt developed the dynamic word embeddings model by integrating neural networks and statistics used in rocket control systems. The result is a complex machine learning algorithm that automatically detects semantic change throughout history. Read further...
More than 50 million Americans suffer from sleep disorders, and diseases including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's can also disrupt sleep. Diagnosing and monitoring these conditions usually requires attaching electrodes and a variety of other sensors to patients, which can further disrupt their sleep. Read further...
It may not be as catchy as chains and weak links, but physicists and engineers know "a material is only as strong as its weakest grain boundary". Read further...
Since 2011, a mysterious illness known as Yellow Canopy Syndrome (YCS) has afflicted Australian sugarcane causing $40 million in losses. Researchers from the University of Texas at Tyler and Sugar Research Australia used supercomputers at the Texas Advanced Computing Center to perform large-scale investigations of the sugarcane genome. They detected signals in the data that could indicate a bacteria or stress causing YCS. They are conducting further computational studies to test their hypotheses. Read further...
Today almost all information stored on hard disc drives or Cloud servers is recorded in magnetic media, because it is non-volatile - i.e. it retains the information when power is switched off - and cheap. For portable devices such as mobile phones and tablets, other forms of non-magnetic memory are used because the technology based on magnetism is impractical and is not energy efficient.
