Climate change may keep you awake - and not just metaphorically. Nights that are warmer than normal can harm human sleep, researchers show in a new paper, with the poor and elderly most affected. According to their findings, if climate change is not addressed, temperatures in 2050 could cost people in the United States millions of additional nights of insufficient sleep per year. By 2099, the figure could rise by several hundred million more nights of lost sleep annually. Read further...
Scientists used to come to Gregory Kurtzer of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's IT department a lot, asking for a better way to use software containers in a high-performance computing (HPC) environment. After a while he got tired of saying, "Sorry, not possible". So he invented a solution and named it Singularity. Read further...
Researchers in Canada have taken a significant step towards enabling secure quantum communication via moving satellites, as announced by the Canadian Government in April 2017. Read further...
The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) recently displayed the power of its new Owens Cluster by running the single-largest scale calculation in the Center's history. Scientel IT Corp used 16,800 cores of the Owens Cluster on May 24 to test database software optimized to run on supercomputer systems. The seamless run created 1.25 Terabytes of synthetic data. There is an enormous amount that we do not understand about the fundamental causes and behaviour of cancer cells, but at some level, experts believe that cancer must relate to DNA and the genome. Read further...
To understand the nature of something extremely complex, you often have to study its smallest parts. In trying to decipher the universe, for example, we search for gravitational waves or faint waves of light from the Big Bang. And to comprehend the very essence of matter itself, we break it down to the subatomic level and use computer simulations to study particles like quarks and gluons. Read further...
Abdullah Muzahid, an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), has received a $450,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development award to develop a hardware-based artificial intelligence system that can detect costly software bugs, system faults and security attacks in computer systems.
