The pursuit of Planet Nine - a hypothesized Neptune-like giant that some scientists believe may be cruising along a remote orbit in our solar system - can now go door-to-door. A new NASA-launched citizen science project seeks the public's help in reviewing more than a million animations to identify moving space objects that could be new discoveries. The effort benefited from data research on a cosmology project led by the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Read further...
SILCA, the information technology and services arm for Crédit Agricole Group, has formally signed on to donate its surplus computer processing power to IBM's World Community Grid in support of humanitarian research. In just its first month of participation, after installing the World Community Grid app on 1100 employee workstations, it contributed the equivalent of three years of computing time to scientific research. AMD took a significant step into the server and data centre market with its most detailed look yet at the upcoming high-performance CPU for servers, codenamed "Naples". Purpose-built to disrupt the status-quo and to scale across the Cloud data centre and traditional on-premise server configurations, "Naples" delivers the highly regarded "Zen" x86 processing engine in industry-leading configurations of up to 32 cores. Superior memory bandwidth and the number of high-speed input/output channels in a single-chip further differentiate "Naples" from anything else in the server market today. The first processors are scheduled to be available in Q2 2017, with volume availability building in the second half of the year through OEM and channel partners. Read further...

Polymer nanocomposites mix particles billionths of a meter (nanometers, nm) in diameter with polymers, which are long molecular chains. Often used to make injection-molded products, they are common in automobiles, fire retardants, packaging materials, drug-delivery systems, medical devices, coatings, adhesives, sensors, membranes and consumer goods. When a team led by the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) tried to verify that shrinking the nanoparticle size would adversely affect the mechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites, they got a big surprise. IBM has created the world's smallest magnet using a single atom - and stored one bit of data on it. Currently, hard disk drives use about 100,000 atoms to store a single bit. The ability to read and write one bit on one atom creates new possibilities for developing significantly smaller and denser storage devices, that could someday, for example, enable storing the entire iTunes library of 35 million songs on a device the size of a credit card.
