During the 4th National eScience Symposium, held in Amsterdam ArenA last October,Primeur Magazinewas able to talk with Fernando Pérez from the University of California. Fernando Pérez originally is a physicist by training but he has spent most of his career building computational tools after his PhD. He has worked in the fields of applied mathematics and neuroscience. In the last few years he has been part of a team building an institute for data science at the University of California at Berkeley where he has an appointment. He recently moved to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory where he is now part of the Data Science and Technology Department. There he is now conducting his research. Read further...
At the occasion of the Digital Infrastructures for Research Conference, held in Krakow, Poland in the Fall of 2016,Primeur Magazinewas able to speak with Natalia Manola from the OpenAire project and infrastructure, which was one of the organizing parties of the Krakow conference. OpenAire is an EU project. This initiative started in 2009 to implement the Open Access Pilot of the European Commission. Gradually, it has moved to implementing the Open Access Publication Horizon 2020 Pilot. OpenAire is involved in the processes of implementing the Open Research Data Pilot as well. Read further...

Scientists at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) of the University of Luxembourg have developed an important mathematical algorithm called "Equihash". Equihash is a core component for the new cryptocurrency Zcash, which offers more privacy and equality than the famous Bitcoin. Holographic atomic memory, invented and constructed by physicists from the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw, is the first device able to generate single photons on demand in groups of several dozen or more. The device, successfully demonstrated in practice, overcomes one of the fundamental obstacles towards the construction of some type of quantum computer. Read further...

Now consider the complex world of quantum computing, where bits of information can simultaneously hold multiple states beyond zero and one, and the potential threats become even trickier to tackle. Physicists at the University of Bonn have cleared a further hurdle on the path to creating quantum computers: in a recent study, they present a method with which they can very quickly and precisely sort large numbers of atoms. Focus on Europe

The European Commission has granted a proposal for the European project HPC-Europa3, an extension of HPC-Europa and HPC-Europa2. This programme provides transnational access for researchers to advanced high-performance computing (HPC) systems available in Europe. Other objectives of HPC-Europa3 are to facilitate new scientific collaborations, and to increase awareness of the benefits in the use of HPC towards SMEs. Peter the Great Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) and Airbus collaborate on development and deployment of ASRP (Assembly Simulation of Riveting Process) software complex. ASRP is a specific and exceptional software solution with a great deal of complexity. It is said to be the only computer code developed by the University that is officially deployed in Airbus. Hazelcast, an open source in-memory data grid (IMDG) with hundreds of thousands of installed clusters and over 17 million server starts per month, has launched Hazelcast Jet - a distributed processing engine for Big Data streams. With Hazelcast's IMDG providing storage functionality, Hazelcast Jet is a new Apache 2 licensed open source project that performs parallel execution to enable data-intensive applications to operate in near real-time. Using directed acyclic graphs (DAG) to model relationships between individual steps in the data processing pipeline, Hazelcast Jet is simple to deploy and can execute both batch and stream-based data processing applications. Hazelcast Jet is appropriate for applications that require a near real-time experience such as sensor updates in IoT architectures (house thermostats, lighting systems), in-store e-commerce systems and social media platforms. Researchers at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have set a new record in the transfer of information via superdense coding, a process by which the properties of particles like photons, protons and electrons are used to store as much information as possible. The ORNL team transferred 1.67 bits per qubit, or quantum bit, over a fiber optic cable, edging out the previous record of 1.63 per qubit. Read further...
Cray Inc. has issued financial results for the year and fourth quarter ended December 31, 2016. All figures are based on U.S. GAAP unless otherwise noted. For 2016, Cray reported total revenue of $629.8 million, which compares with $724.7 million for 2015. Net income for 2016 was $10.6 million, or $0.26 per diluted share, compared to $27.5 million, or $0.68 per diluted share for 2015. Non-GAAP net income, which adjusts for selected unusual and non-cash items, was $19.9 million, or $0.49 per diluted share for 2016, compared to $53.0 million, or $1.30 per diluted share for 2015. With a new cluster of specialized graphics processing units (GPUs) now installed, the University of Massachusetts Amherst is poised to attract the nation's next crop of top Ph.D. students and researchers in such fields as artificial intelligence, computer vision and natural language processing, according to associate professor Erik Learned-Miller of the College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS).
