Majorana fermions are particles that could potentially be used as information units for a quantum computer. An experiment by physicists at the Swiss Nanoscience Institute and the University of Basel has confirmed their theory that Majorana fermions can be generated and measured on a superconductor at the end of wires made from single iron atoms. The researchers also succeeded in making the interior of a Majorana visible for the first time. Read further...
Physicists at the University of Bath have developed a technique to more reliably produce single photons that can be imprinted with quantum information. The invention will benefit a variety of processes which rely on photons to carry quantum information, such as quantum computing, secure quantum communication and precision measurements at low light levels. Full submissions for the ISC 2017 Research Paper Sessions are now being accepted through December 16, 2016. The deadline has been extended to accommodate current submissions from engineers and scientists in academia, industry and government. The Research Paper Sessions will be held from June 19 through June 21, 2017. ISC High Performance (ISC 2017) will once again be held at Forum Messe Frankfurt. Read further...
On December 1, 2016, Cineca organized at Bologna a meeting to present Summer of HPC, the transnational mobility programme promoted by PRACE. Summer of HPC is a PRACE programme that offers university students the opportunity to spend two months in the summer at HPC centres accross Europe. MareNostrum 4, the new supercomputer of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), will be 12.4 times more powerful than the current MareNostrum 3. The centre has just approved the purchase of a new supercomputer that will have a performance capacity of 13, 7 Petaflop/s and will be located in the Torre Girona chapel, home to its predecessors, the MareNostrum 1, 2 and 3. The new TX-Green computing system at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory Supercomputing Center (LLSC) has been named the most powerful supercomputer in New England, 43rd most powerful in the U.S., and 106th most powerful in the world. A team of experts at TOP500 ranks the world's 500 most powerful supercomputers biannually. The systems are ranked based on a LINPACK Benchmark, which is a measure of a system's floating-point computing power, i.e., how fast a computer solves a dense system of linear equations. Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. has developed a high-speed in-memory data deduplication technology for all-flash arrays, which are large-scale, high-speed storage systems and use multiple flash devices such as solid-state drives. This technology enables the production of storage systems with up to twice the response speed when writing data, compared to previous methods. Read further...

Now, there's a similar game in town: Who knew whom in Renaissance Britain? This is the question that the project "Six Degrees of Francis Bacon" seeks to uncover. At the Radiological Society of North America Annual Meeting (RSNA 2016) IBM announced that it will preview new imaging solutions from Watson Health and Merge Healthcare designed to help health care providers pursue personalized approaches to patient diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. The solutions benefit from more than a decade of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) work conducted in IBM Research. A nanophotonics group lead by Prof. Brahim Lounis of the University of Bordeaux and including scientists from MIPT has performed a unique experiment involving the optical manipulation of individual Abrikosov vortices in a superconductor. The manipulation technique proposed in the study could be used to develop optically controlled RSFQ logic elements. This technology is seen as the most promising in terms of the design of superfast memory for quantum computers. Read further...

IBM Watson Health and Pfizer Inc. have signed a collaboration that will utilize IBM Watson for Drug Discovery to help accelerate Pfizer's research in immuno-oncology, an approach to cancer treatment that uses the body's immune system to help fight cancer. Pfizer is one of the first organisations worldwide to deploy Watson for Drug Discovery, and the first to customize the Cloud-based cognitive tool - tapping in to Watson's machine learning, natural language processing, and other cognitive reasoning technologies to support the identification of new drug targets, combination therapies for study, and patient selection strategies in immuno-oncology. Fujitsu has developed five Zinrai-related services that are being rolled out incrementally in Japan, helping customers accelerate their use of artificial intelligence. These services are based on the company's foundation of AI technology and knowledge, and are part of the "Human Centric AI Zinrai" framework, Fujitsu released November 2015. The Cloud

Cloud computing is a type of computing which has been developed with a vision to share computing resources rather than owing or having a local servers or personal devices to handle applications. Cloud computing is similar to Grid computing, a type of computing where unused processing cycles of all computers in a network are pooled and harnessed to solve problems too intensive for any stand-alone machine. Cloud systems management software are that software which operates and monitors applications, data and services residing in the Cloud. With use of such Cloud system management software, operators and engineers are able to monitor computing-based resources are working optimally and whether it is properly interacting with users and other services. Operating similar to their physical counterparts, the vMX and vSRX platforms will enable enterprises to flexibly deploy carrier-grade routing and firewall functions at the click of a button. Customers will have the option to purchase services on-demand via an annual or hourly subscription directly from the AWS Marketplace, or from Juniper Networks through a Bring Your Own License (BYOL) model.
