The University of Amsterdam (UvA) has been awarded a coordinating role in the Human Brain Project, funded by the European Union (EU) designed to deepen our knowledge of the brain. UvA Professor Cyriel Pennartz is coordinating a subproject on Systems and Cognitive Neuroscience in which he and 15 other research groups within the EU try to uncover the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive processes, such as sleep, memory and consciousness. IBM Research has signed a multi-year collaboration with the Department of Brain & Cognitive Sciences at MIT to advance the scientific field of machine vision, a core aspect of artificial intelligence. The new IBM-MIT Laboratory for Brain-inspired Multimedia Machine Comprehension's (BM3C) goal will be to develop cognitive computing systems that emulate the human ability to understand and integrate inputs from multiple sources of audio and visual information into a detailed computer representation of the world that can be used in a variety of computer applications in industries such as health care, education, and entertainment. Synopsys Inc. is collaborating with TSMC to deliver innovative technologies to enable adoption of TSMC's High Performance Compute (HPC) Platform. The new technologies, enabled through TSMC and Synopsys collaboration, will be available in the Synopsys' Galaxy Design Platform for the 7-nanometer (nm) process in November 2016. Via pillar, multi-source clock tree synthesis (CTS) with hybrid clock mesh and automated bus routing to match resistance and capacitance on critical nets are some examples of the jointly developed technologies. Cadence Design Systems Inc. will perform several important deliveries in its collaboration with TSMC to advance 7nm FinFET designs for mobile and high-performance computing (HPC) platforms. As a result of the joint work, Cadence digital, signoff and custom/analogue tools have achieved certification for the latest Design Rule Manual (DRM) and SPICE for the TSMC 7nm process. In addition, a new process design kit (PDK) enabling customers to achieve optimal power, performance and area (PPA) is now available. Cadence has also made enhancements to the 7nm Custom Design Reference Flow and library characterization flow. These design tool advancements have enabled Cadence to accelerate initial deliveries of its high-speed SerDes and low-latency DDR IP cores to leading customers, with test chips expected to tape out in the fourth quarter of this year. Researchers at North Carolina State University have developed new, non-linear, chaos-based integrated circuits that enable computer chips to perform multiple functions with fewer transistors. These integrated circuits can be manufactured with "off the shelf" fabrication processes and could lead to novel computer architectures that do more with less circuitry and fewer transistors. Applications

A research team from the University of Bonn has succeeded for the first time in using light stimuli to stop life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia in mouse hearts. Furthermore, as shown in computer simulations at Johns Hopkins University, this technique could also be used successfully for human hearts. The study opens up a new approach to the development of implantable defibrillators, in which the strong electrical impulses of conventional defibrillators are replaced by gentler, pain-free light impulses. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin present in our daily lives and our body can accumulate it over the years. Food consumption, such as fish and rice, is the most common source of mercury exposure. Mercury can be found in dental amalgams, compact fluorescence lamps, vaccines, drugs, and electronics or can be used in artisanal gold mining. Finding the source of mercury contamination in our bodies is crucial for treatment and forensic investigations, but at present knowledge of the molecular form of mercury in human tissues and fluids, which could indicate source, is limited. However, an international team from the CNRS, the Universities of Grenoble Alpes and Bordeaux, France, the ESRF, the European synchrotron in Grenoble, France and the University of Illinois at Chicago, US, has developed new analytical capabilities that allow the identification of chemical forms of mercury in human hair that trace exposure.
