Focus

In the first session of Distinguished Speakers, chaired by Erich Strohmaier, at ISC 2016 in Frankfurt, Germany, Paul Messina from Argonne National Laboratory talked about the U.S. governmental approach to reach capable exascale computing. There are some major technical challenges for exascale, including energy efficiency, interconnect technology, memory technology, scalable system software, programming systems, data management, and exascale algorithms, amongst others, Paul Messina told the audience. He explained what the National Strategic Computing Initiative (NCSI) is about and the Department of Energy's (DOE) role in it. Read further...
In the first session of Distinguished Speakers, chaired by Erich Strohmaier, at ISC 2016 in Frankfurt, Germany, Haohuan Fu from the National Supercomputer Center at Wuxi in China, introduced the new nr. 1 machine in the TOP500 list: the Sunway TaihuLight. Haohuan Fu started by explaining the name of the new system. It is named after Lake Taihu. Lake Taihu is a lake with intense light in the eastern part of China, very close to the city of Shanghai. This is one of the most populated areas in China with a number of major cities with a lot of industries. The National Supercomputer Center at Wuxi is situated nearby the lake. Read further...

Exascale supercomputing

According to the national plan for the next generation of high performance computers, China will develop an exascale computer during the 13th Five-Year-Plan period (2016-2020). A supercomputer capable of at least a billion billion calculations per second will enter service by 2020, said the head of the School of Computing at the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT). Quantum computing

RMIT quantum computing researchers have developed and demonstrated a method capable of efficiently detecting high-dimensional entanglement. Entanglement in quantum physics is the ability of two or more particles to be related to each other in ways which are beyond what is possible in classical physics. Having information on a particle in an entangled ensemble reveals an "unnatural" amount of information on the other particles. The researchers' paper, "High-dimensional entanglement certification", has been published on 17 June inScientific Reports. Read further...

FORTH - the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas, in Heraklion, Greece and Kaleao Ltd., a high tech company based in Cambridge, UK, have created Kaleao's Heraklion development centre that officially seals their on-going collaboration towards a joint research lab on low power computing and shows a clear indication of the growing international high-tech involvement in Crete, Greece. Bright Computing, provider of management software for high performance computing (HPC) clusters, Big Data clusters, and OpenStack Clouds, will be exhibiting and presenting at the TERATEC Forum, taking place in France, June 28 and 29, 2016. This is the 11th edition of the TERATEC Forum, which is a major event in France that brings together international HPC, simulation and Big Data experts. Using numerical modelling, researchers from Russia, the US, and China have discovered previously unknown features of rutile TiO2, which is a promising photocatalyst. The calculations were performed at an MIPT laboratory on the supercomputer Rurik. The paper detailing the results has been published in the journalPhysical Chemistry Chemical Physics. From his work compiling an annual list of the world's fastest computers to his research expanding the boundaries of supercomputing, Professor Jack Dongarra is an icon of the supercomputing world. Now, in recognition of those efforts, Jack Dongarra, who directs University of Tennessee's Innovative Computing Laboratory, has picked up a pair of vastly different but equally impressive awards. Applications

The Canadian research team that helped spearhead the international brain-mapping project known as BigBrain is about to get a major boost in its effort to produce sharply higher-resolution brain maps, thanks to technology from EMC Corporation. McGill will establish a research-and-development centre that will serve as a test bed to adapt EMC Isilon scale-out NAS for powerful visualization and data-storage technology to support the complex needs of leading-edge neuroscience. The new centre will be expanded in coming years to encompass research across the university, reflecting the increased role of Big Data in research in the social sciences and arts, as well as natural sciences. Children's Mercy Kansas City is transforming children's lives and redefining paediatric medicine with an incredibly innovative genomics approach powered by DDN storage. The hospital has deployed DDN's GS7K with 1PB of storage to speed patient diagnosis and disease treatments by fueling compute and data-intensive research from the world's first whole genome sequencing centre in a paediatric setting. Modern rockets and their launch vehicles commonly rely on hydrogen-oxygen mixtures as propellant, but this combination is highly explosive. The Challenger space shuttle catastrophe of 1986 is associated with self-ignition of such mixtures. Risks of explosion are mitigated by the evaporation and burning of droplets within hydrogen-oxygen aerosol mixtures. Inside rocket combustion chambers, the identical evaporation and burning process is used, so a solid understanding of how these processes behave is essential for evaluating the effectiveness and safety of hydrogen-oxygen liquid engines. Cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) are caused by a perturbation in the blood supply of the brain leading to a quick loss of cerebral functions, that is very often lethal. There are two categories of CVA: ischemic CVA (80% cases) resulting from the occlusion of a cerebral artery and haemorrhagic CVA (20% cases) provoked by a bleeding vessel. It is nowadays a major challenge in terms of public health care. In Western countries, one of 600 people suffers from a CVA each year and 120,000 cases are counted yearly in France. A project led by Frédéric Nataf, senior researcher at CNRS and INRIA, and his team addressed this problem and used amongst others the resources from GENCI and PRACE. Read further...
The American Diabetes Association and IBM Watson Health have signed a long-term collaboration to bring together the cognitive computing power of Watson and the Association's vast repository of clinical and research data. The organisations aim to build a first-of-its-kind diabetes advisor for patients and caregivers. As part of their commitment to the diabetes community, the organisations also announced a challenge to app developers to propose cognitive innovations that may transform how diabetes is prevented and managed. Industry leaders, developers and researchers at the American Diabetes Association's 76th Scientific Sessions are demonstrating how they are tapping into Watson cognitive computing to transform the lives of people with diabetes. At the Scientific Sessions, IBM unveiled a broad-based collaboration with the American Diabetes Association starting with a challenge to the worldwide developer community to build cognitive apps that reimagine how diabetes may be prevented, identified and managed. IBM also announced progress on its projects with Medtronic, featured work from the Watson developer community and introduced a new research project to better understand diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of blindness that afflicts one in three people with diabetes. IBM has formed a Watson Health medical imaging collaborative, a global initiative comprised of more than fifteen leading health systems, academic medical centres, ambulatory radiology providers and imaging technology companies. The collaborative aims to bring cognitive imaging into daily practice to help doctors address breast, lung, and other cancers; diabetes; eye health; brain disease; and heart disease and related conditions, such as stroke. NetApp has integrated its flash storage portfolio, including the NetApp SolidFire SF series, All Flash FAS (AFF) and EF-Series, with the NetApp Docker Volume Plug-In (nDVP). This native Docker plug-in allows containerized applications to easily maintain state by consuming persistent storage from NetApp. This capability enables Docker developers and operators to take advantage of NetApp's robust all-flash storage and data management primitives. Local Motors, the leading vehicle technology integrator and creator of the world's first 3D-printed cars, has introduced the first self-driving vehicle to integrate the advanced cognitive computing capabilities of IBM Watson. The vehicle, dubbed "Olli", was unveiled during the Grand Opening of a new Local Motors facility in National Harbor, Maryland, and transported Local Motors CEO and co-founder John B. Rogers, Jr. along with vehicle designer Edgar Sarmiento from the Local Motors co-creation community into the new facility. The electric vehicle, which can carry up to 12 people, is equipped with some of the world's most advanced vehicle technology, including IBM Watson Internet of Things (IoT) for Automotive, to improve the passenger experience and allow natural interaction with the vehicle.
