Quantum computing

An international research group observed a state in copper oxides in which orbital degrees of freedom did not freeze at low temperatures and electrons fluctuated due to quantum fluctuations. The group also clarified the time scale of these quantum fluctuations in multifrequency electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments in a strong magnetic field for the first time. Read further...

The Human Brain Project (HBP) has released initial versions of its six Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Platforms to users outside the Project. These Platforms are designed to help the scientific community to accelerate progress in neuroscience, medicine, and computing. Read further...
The Human Brain Project (HBP) is developing a shared European research infrastructure with the aim of examining the organisation of the brain using detailed analyses and simulations and thus combating neurological and psychiatric disorders. For this purpose, the HBP is creating new information technologies like neurosynaptic processors which are based on the principles governing how the human brain works. Following the launch of the scientific infrastructure set up by researchers from 24 countries over the last two-and-a-half years, the Human Brain Project is now entering its next phase. Allinea Software, a provider of software tools for developing and optimizing high performance code, will address developers and users at the GPU Technology Conference (GTC 16) in San Jose on the 4th-7th April 2016. The company will highlight the best practices required to unleash the potential performance within the latest generation of NVIDIA GPUs for a wide range of software applications. Read further...

Hardware

DataCore's second SPC-1 result has catapulted the company into third place among the SPC's Top 10 of absolute performers while achieving the best price-performance and fastest response times among those Top 10. DataCore again leapfrogged the field and now holds the top two positions in the SPC-1 Price-Performance category. The DataCore Parallel Server software at the heart of the hyper-converged configuration delivered 1,510,090.52 SPC-1 IOPS. Notably, the number one and two systems in the category are very large footprint multimillion dollar systems that are 14 times more costly than the compact 4U-sized DataCore based solution. Researchers at the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) will harness the AMD FirePro S9300 x2 Server GPU, the world's fastest single-precision GPU accelerator, to analyze extraordinary amounts of data to help create a new, very detailed 3D map of the largest volume of the Universe ever observed. Rather than using traditional dish-shaped telescopes, CHIME consists of four 100-metre-long cylindrical reflectors which cover an area larger than five professional hockey rinks and gathers signals for the critical computational analyses supplied by the AMD FirePro S9300 x2 GPU cluster. Read further...
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has debuted new compute platforms with built-in support for Persistent Memory, a technology that combines the performance of high-speed memory and the persistence of storage to deliver new levels of application performance. HPE has also launched new HPE ProLiant Gen9 server options and related solutions to help enterprise customers modernize their data centres. Read further...
IBM is making it easier and faster for organisations to access and analyze data in-place on the IBM z Systems mainframe with the new z/OS Platform for Apache Spark. This is creating new opportunities for data scientists and developers to apply advanced analytics to the system's rich data sets for real-time insights. Read further...

Lipid molecules have split personalities - one part loves water, whereas the other avoids it at all costs. Lipids make up cell membranes, the frontline defense in preventing cellular access to bacterial and viral invaders. Many researchers believe that the membrane is not just a scaffold where proteins reside, but instead actually plays an important role in a number of biological processes. Researchers are also starting to see that lipids and proteins can form small patches, similar to a mosaic. This patchiness seems to have a functional role in the life of a cell and in regulating its different processes. Functional patches of lipids are commonly referred to as lipid rafts. Read further...
A new technology developed in collaboration with UC San Diego's High Performance Wireless Research and Education Network (HPWREN) and the Nevada Seismological Laboratory may give firefighters the upper hand in the battle against wildfires by increasing early detection of fire hazards in some of the most remote locations in Southern California. The student-invented game Scoring Frenzy may be a relatively simple wager for a fantasy sports lover, but it took some massive supercomputing power before it was ready for the patent application process. Developer John Lukasik and his partner, both students in last fall's Gaming Innovation class, were able to run game simulations on one of the world's most powerful supercomputers, University of Nevada Las Vegas' (UNLV) Cherry Creek II.
