Intersect360 Research has surveyed the High Performance Computing user community to complete its eighth Site Budget Allocation Map, a look at how HPC sites divide and spend their budgets. We surveyed users on their spending in seven top-level categories: hardware, software, facilities, staffing, services, cloud/utility/outsourcing computing, and other. Each category was further divided into constituent subcategories, resulting in 27 unique items included in the analysis. Read further...
Fujitsu Limited, in joint research with the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) and Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., has developed the world's largest magnetic-reversal simulator, using a mesh covering more than 300 million micro-regions. Based on the large-scale magnetic-reversal simulation technology first developed in 2013, this new development offers a faster calculation algorithm and more efficient massive parallel processing. The simulations are run on the K computer. Read further...
The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) has selected its next supercomputer for advancing atmospheric and Earth science, following a competitive open procurement process. The new machine will help scientists lay the groundwork for improved predictions of a range of phenomena, from hour-by-hour risks associated with thunderstorm outbreaks to the timing of the 11-year solar cycle and its potential impacts on GPS and other sensitive technologies. The new system, named Cheyenne, will be installed this year at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC) and become operational at the beginning of 2017. Read further...
DataDirect Networks (DDN) fortified its position as the HPC storage market leader during 2015. DDN posted the largest share of installed systems at HPC sites and expanded its lead versus other storage vendors at surveyed HPC sites according to the recently published Intersect360 Research HPC User Site Census report. With massively scalable storage technology that is able to outpace the performance requirements and growth of Enterprise Big Data while enabling HPC users to achieve Exascale, DDN is leading the market with revolutionary products that solve the end-to-end data lifecycle from cache and SSD to high performance file storage and archive. DDN allows customers to achieve staggering 3x to 10x performance increases when they migrate to DDN storage solutions. Read further...
The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) has selected DDN's new SFA14K high-performance hyper-converged storage platform to drive the performance and deliver the capacity needed for scientific breakthroughs in climate, weather and atmospheric-related science to power its "Cheyenne" supercomputer. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, NCAR brings together researchers from more than 100 North American colleges and universities along with thousands of scientists from the global scientific community to identify the risks and opportunities associated with changes in the Earth's atmosphere.
