The OpenMP ARB has launched OpenMP 4.5, a major upgrade of the OpenMP standard language specifications. This release provides a substantial improvement on the support for programming of accelerator and GPU devices, and supports now also the parallelization of loops with well-structured dependencies. At the Third eScience Symposium, recently held at the ArenA in Amsterdam, The Netherlands,Primeur Magazinehad the opportunity to talk with Dieter Kranzlmüller, Professor in Computer Sciences at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and also a member of the Board of Directors of the Leibniz Supercomputer Center. Dieter Kranzlmüller presented an introduction into exascale computing at the eScience Symposium. We are all preparing for exascale at this point in time and we see the challenges ahead, consisting of energy consumption, scalability, complexity, and reliability. Even with today's machines where we have several hundred thousands of cores we already see many of these aspects and we are working hard to getting them solved for the next version of machines, according to Dieter Kranzlmüller. Mellanox Technologies Ltd., a supplier of high-performance, end-to-end interconnect solutions for data centre servers and storage systems, has made an open invitation to distinguished high-performance computing (HPC) centres to join a newly formed consortium titled the "HPC Centers of Excellence". The goal of the HPC Centers of Excellence is to accelerate new uses of intelligent interconnect into areas previously limited by cost, knowledge or imagination, to explore new technologies and enable better research and product development, and to collaborate on Co-Designed architecture and solutions development. "Eureka!" is what Archimedes is supposed to have exclaimed after having made his extraordinary discovery in the bath tub. In reference to this event, the new supercomputer developed by Forschungszentrum Juelich together with the Russian manufacturer T-Platforms and the HPC software and support company ParTec is called JURECA. With its enormous computing power of 2.2 quadrillion operations per second, it is hoped to provide researchers from all over Germany with numerous 'Eureka' moments by permitting the investigation of complex issues in a multitude of fields. Vodafone Foundation and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research have launched "DreamLab", an Android smartphone app that gives Australians the power to help fast track a cure for cancer while they sleep at night. Taking the fight against cancer from the laboratory to the humble smartphone, DreamLab works by pooling the processing power of Australian mobile devices to create the nation's first smartphone supercomputer for cancer research. This in turn will help speed up Garvan's research into some of Australia's biggest killers including breast, ovarian, prostate and pancreatic cancer. Read further...
A new BOINC server image for AWS is now available, making it easy to deploy a BOINC server in the Amazon Cloud. Hosting a BOINC server on a Cloud has two advantages. It's cheaper for small projects to rent time on a Cloud versus paying for hardware, bandwidth, and electric power. It's easier and faster to use an existing OS image with the BOINC server already installed than to compile and configure it. Read further...

Headquartered in Bremerhaven, Germany, AWI is one of the country's premier research institutes within the Helmholtz Association, and is an internationally respected center of expertise for polar and marine research. Numascale was selected to join 1degreenorth, BlueData, MonetDB, and Neo4j to provide on-demand High Performance Computing Big Data Analytics ("HPC-BDA") infrastructure for the Singapore National Supercomputer Center (NSCC). The companies signed a one-year MoU earlier this month to furnish the infrastructure for experimentation and proof-of-concept projects for the Big Data and data science community in Singapore. Numascale has made available NumaConnect-2, a scalable cache coherent memory technology that connects servers in a single high performance shared memory image. The NumaConnect-2 advances the successful Numascale technology with a new parallel micro-architecture that results in a significantly higher interconnect bandwidth, outperforming its predecessor by a factor of up to 5x. In capitalizing on Altera's Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology, Numascale now offers an interconnect node capable of scaling with anticipated industry bandwidth demands, and featuring the flexibility to adapt to emerging standards and customer requirements. The UK's Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) has completed installation of SGI's record-breaking high performance computing (HPC) system, SGI ICE XA. The new system, comprised of two SGI ICE XA systems, integrates into AWE's existing production HPC system utilising two SGI ICE X systems. The new installation will significantly increase the organisation's supercomputing performance and enable AWE to further develop its complex scientific and technological capabilities, such as scientific modelling. The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at the University of Texas in Austin has selected Mellanox's end-to-end 100Gb/s EDR interconnect solutions to develop North America's first end-to-end 100Gb/s EDR high-performance computing (HPC) cluster. It is TACC's mission to provide researchers with cutting edge technology, which led the centre to select industry innovator Mellanox for their next generation solutions. Intel Corporation has introduced several advancements to its Intel Scalable System Framework (Intel SSF) that promise to bring high performance computing (HPC) capabilities and benefits to more industries and new workloads. Huawei will deliver a high performance computing (HPC) cluster for Apache Spark to Poland's University of Warsaw Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling (ICM). Huawei and the University of Warsaw agreed that the HPC cluster for Apache Spark will be installed at ICM's new data centre facility in Warsaw, and will be among the largest installations for Apache Spark in Europe, comprising of more than 8,000 CPU cores, 43TB of aggregate RAM and 8PB of internal disk space. The U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and its three national labs have reached an agreement with NVIDIA's PGI software to create an open-source Fortran compiler designed for integration with the widely used LLVM compiler infrastructure. LLVM is a collection of reusable compiler and tool chain technologies with a modular design that facilitates support for a wide variety of programming languages and processor architectures.The Fortran front-end module created through this project will be derived from NVIDIA's PGI Fortran compiler, which has been used in production across a variety of high performance computing systems for more than 25 years. Cray Inc. has been awarded a contract to provide a Cray XC40 supercomputer to the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling (ICM) at the University of Warsaw in Poland. The six-cabinet Cray XC40 system will be located in ICM's OCEAN research data centre, and will enable interdisciplinary teams of scientists to address the most computationally complex challenges in areas such as life sciences, physics, cosmology, chemistry, environmental science, engineering, and the humanities. ICM is Poland's leading research center for computational and data driven sciences, and is one of the premier centres for large-scale high performance computing (HPC) simulations and big data analytics in Central and Eastern Europe. Cray Inc. will deliver a high performance computing (HPC)-optimized Docker solution for the Cray XC line of supercomputers. The new feature will be available to all Cray XC customers starting next month, and on the Cray CS400, Cray XE and Cray XK platforms in 2016. With Docker as part of Cray's official software distribution, Cray's customers will be able to implement software containers that package an entire software stack - application codes, shared libraries, base operating system files, user environment variables, dependencies and more - into easily-deployable images that contain everything an application needs to run with increased efficiency across multiple platforms. International Data Corporation (IDC ) has passed the ninth round of recipients of the HPC Innovation Excellence Award at the SC15 supercomputer industry conference in Austin, Texas. This year's winners came from around the globe: US-based Argonne National Laboratory, the Korean Institute of Science and Technology, and a recent start-up, Sardina Systems from Estonia. The first IDC Innovation awards were given out at ISC 2011 and since then IDC has presented over 60 Innovation Awards at two leading high performance computing (HPC) conferences - ISC and SC - to a wide range of academic, commercial, and government sites from around the world. IBM and Xilinx Inc. have signed a multi-year strategic collaboration to enable higher performance and energy-efficient data centre applications through Xilinx FPGA-enabled workload acceleration on IBM POWER-based systems. SC15, the 27th anniversary conference of high performance computing (HPC), networking, storage and analysis, celebrated the contributions of researchers and scientists - from those just starting their careers to those whose contributions have made lasting impacts. The conference drew a record-breaking 12,903+ registered attendees (number as of 12pm on 11/19) and featured a technical programme spanning six days. EXASOL, developer of the world's fastest analytic database, reveals research it conducted in partnership with Antibiotic Research UK, the world's first charity created to develop new antibiotics in the fight against superbugs. Using the power of its fast analytic database and prescription data spanning 5 years, EXASOL found that while antibiotic prescriptions are coming down across England, struggling GP practices in the most deprived parts of the country are prescribing 20% more and, worryingly, antibiotic prescriptions are on the increase in these deprived areas. Scientists at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) are studying how to improve the development of advanced computing systems to create faster software under the auspices of RePhrase, a new research project from the European Union Horizon 2020 programme. These new techniques will make it possible to improve applications such as industrial manufacturing processes and railway traffic monitoring, as well as the diagnosis of mental illnesses. The High Performance Conjugate Gradients (HPCG) Benchmark list was announced at SC'15. This is the fourth list produced for the emerging benchmark designed to complement the traditional High Performance LINPACK (HPL) benchmark used as the official metric for ranking the TOP500 systems. The first HPCG list was announced at ISC'14 a year and a half ago, containing only 15 entries and the SC'14 list had 25. The current list contains more than 60 entries as HPCG continues to gain traction in the HPC community.
