Exascale supercomputing

Research and Markets has added the "Impact of Exascale Computing trends in Key sectors (TechVision)" report to their offering. Exascale computing is emerging as the next benchmark for supercomputing. Moving ahead of petascale computing capabilities, exascale processing speed will allow computations to be done at a processing speed similar to that of a human brain. This research service focuses on technology, research, and innovations that are contributing to the development of exascale computing. The research service also highlights the impact of exascale computing trends on key industry sectors. Read further...

Focus on Europe

At the 2015 International High Performance Computing (HPC) User Forum in Paris, France, Cray Inc. has announced the creation of the Cray Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Research Lab. The Cray EMEA Research Lab will foster the development of deep technical collaborations with key customers and partners, and will serve as the focal point for the company's technical engagements with the European HPC ecosystem. The Gauss Centre for Supercomputing is providing financial support for a team of computer science students from the Technische Universität München (TUM) participating in the Student Cluster Competition (SCC) at this year's Supercomputing Conference (SC) in Austin, Texas. The Munich based team, which is the only European representative among the nine teams qualifying for the annually repeating competition at SC, will compete on the SC15 exhibit floor in a real-time challenge by solving high-performance computing (HPC) tasks set by the SCC-committee. The TUM-students are leveraging the HPC infrastructure and expertise of GCS centre Leibniz Supercomputing Centre in Garching near Munich (LRZ) to thoroughly prepare for the upcoming tough contest. Middleware

Parallel computing makes big computational problems feasible by breaking them up into smaller parts. On a supercomputer, these parts share information with one another to find a solution. Ideally, a high-performance computing (HPC) application would be packed across a supercomputer's nodes so that it only crossed communication paths with collaborating nodes. But on a leadership class machine, that's rarely the case. New jobs fill vacant nodes amidst active jobs as soon as the space becomes available. Gaps between communicating nodes commonly arise, slowing down communication and affecting performance. Read further...
Adaptive Computing, which powers many of the world's largest private Cloud and HPC environments with its Moab optimization and scheduling software, has fully deployed Moab 8.1 at the High Performance Computing for Health Sciences, also known as HPC4Health, which today consists of The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and University Health Network's (UHN) Princess Margaret Cancer Center. HPC4Health is part of a larger vision, which also includes Compute Canada and Compute Ontario, to bring multiple organisations together to share resources dynamically, securely and equitably. Moab HPC Suite, Enterprise Edition, version 8.1 (Moab) has been deployed for its elastic computing, advanced policies and accounting capabilities to deliver on this vision. Read further...

Hardware

Curtiss-Wright Corporation's Defense Solutions division has introduced the industry's highest density, fastest throughput 3U form factor Ethernet switch module. The new VPX3-687 1/10/40 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switch module is designed to address the increasing demand for 10 and 40 GbE data transfers in embedded systems. Read further...
Asetek has received a purchase order for its RackCDU data centre liquid cooling system placed by an undisclosed Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) partner. The order for 21 RackCDU with Direct-to-Chip cooling loops is to satisfy an undisclosed OEM customer installation. Both the OEM and the end user will be announced when the information becomes public. At the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF), users ask and they receive. Prompted by the annual user survey, OLCF's Rhea received an upgrade this fall. In two phases, OLCF staff doubled Rhea's amount of RAM per node and added GPU nodes. Rhea is a commodity-type Linux cluster that provides a conduit for large-scale scientific discovery through pre- and postprocessing and analysis of simulation data generated on the OLCF's 27-petaflop Titan supercomputer. DataDirect Networks (DDN) today announced that British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has deployed DataDirect Netowrks' (DDN) SFA7700X hybrid flash storage appliance to meet an exponential surge in research data and complex climate models that are helping to shed light on major environmental issues such as the impact of global warming on the Antarctic ice shelf. As one of the world's leading environmental research centres, BAS embraces a research strategy called Polar Science for Planet Earth, which includes months-long expeditions on ice-strengthened ships to measure as much of the Antarctic environment as possible. ACM and IEEE Computer Society have named Katherine Yelick as the recipient of the 2015 ACM/IEEE Computer Society Ken Kennedy Award for innovative research contributions to parallel computing languages that have been used in both the research community and in production environments. She was also cited for her strategic leadership of the national research laboratories and for developing novel educational and mentoring tools. The award will be presented at SC 15: International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis November 17, in Austin, Texas. Read further...
Researchers have imaged in unprecedented detail the three-dimensional structure of supercoiled DNA, revealing that its shape is much more dynamic than the well-known double helix. Various DNA shapes, including figure-8s, were imaged using a powerful microscopy technique by researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine in the US, and then examined using supercomputer simulations run at the University of Leeds. EGI has established a Cloud-based e-infrastructure for training, under the coordination of the SA2.1 task of the EGI-Engage project. The training infrastructure is hosted as a dedicated resource pool - training.egi.eu, a Virtual Organisation (VO), on the EGI Federated Cloud infrastructure. The infrastructure provides resources and services for face-to-face events, online training courses (Webinars, MOOCs) or self-paced learning modules. The training VO is integrated with the 'per-user proxy factory' solution of EGI to generate personal, but short-living proxy certificates in an easy way, for trainers and trainees. Read further...
