At the ISC 2015 Exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany,Primeur Magazineinterviewed Michael Resch and Uwe Wössner at the HLRS booth where a sparkling Porsche 111 Turbo S drew the attention of many visitors.Primeur Magazinewanted to know more about it and indeed, there was more than met the eye behind this shiny appearance. Michael Resch, Director of the High Performance Computer Centre in Stuttgart (HLRS) explained that the Porsche 111 Turbo S was designed using supercomputers. In the booth the visitors could see how close simulation was performed to optimize the shape to reduce the car's fuel consumption. Read further...

The Oort Cloud is a belt far out in the universe, way beyond Pluto. It is named after the Dutch astronomer Jan Hendrik Oort. Hence it was a logical name to use for the new SURFsara High Performance Computing Cloud cluster. SURFsara is the Dutch national supercomputing centre, part of the SURF Dutch e-Infrastructure family. American chip manufacturer Intel and QuTech, the quantum institute of TU Delft and TNO, have finalised plans for a ten-year intensive collaboration. The ISC High Performance conference, Europe's most renowned forum for high performance computing, is now open to research paper submissions. The ISC Research Paper sessions are an integral part of the 31st supercomputing conference series and will be held June 20, through June 22, 2016. Next year's conference will take place in Frankfurt, Germany, from June 19-23. ISC High Performance 2016 is looking forward to bringing 3,000 academicians, industry leaders and end users from around the world to the event. Read further...

NEC Corporation and Hortonworks Inc. have agreed to partner in the field of distributed processing of Big Data. The agreement enables NEC to resell support services for the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP), the industry's only 100-percent open source data platform powered by "Apache Hadoop", in Japan and other Asian markets. This will allow NEC customers to utilize Open Enterprise Hadoop as a complementary component of their data architectures to enable a broad range of new applications, as well as enrich existing ones with additional data sources. A set of automated calibration techniques for tuning residential and commercial building energy efficiency software models to match measured data is now available as an open source code. The Autotune code, developed at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is available on GitHub. ORNL principal investigator Joshua New, in collaboration with a team of researchers, developed the automated calibration software, which reduces the amount of time and expertise needed to optimize building parameters for cost and energy savings. Applications

As part of a broad effort to study the environmental and societal effects of climate change, NASA has begun a multi-year field campaign to investigate ecological impacts of the rapidly changing climate in Alaska and northwestern Canada, such as the thawing of permafrost, wildfires and changes to wildlife habitats. The Arctic Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) will bring together on-the-ground research in Alaska and northwestern Canada with data collected by NASA airborne instruments, satellites and other agency programmes, including SMAP, OCO-2, and upcoming ICESat-2 and NISAR missions. University of California, Berkeley, seismologists have produced for the first time a sharp, three-dimensional scan of Earth's interior that conclusively connects plumes of hot rock rising through the mantle with surface hotspots that generate volcanic island chains like Hawaii, Samoa and Iceland. Essentially a computed tomography, or CT scan, of Earth's interior, the picture emerged from a supercomputer simulation at the Department of Energy's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. IBM has expanded its Internet of Things (IoT) platform - called IBM IoT Foundation - through an integration with ARM, providing out of the box connectivity with ARM mbed-enabled devices to analytics services. This fusion will allow huge quantities of data from devices such as industrial appliances, weather sensors and wearable monitoring devices to be gathered, analyzed and acted upon. Read further...
Mellanox Technologies Ltd., a supplier of high-performance, end-to-end interconnect solutions, has made available hyper-converged platforms for enterprise private Clouds and telecom service providers. The reference platforms utilize VMware vSphere 6's advanced features, including VMware Virtual SAN 6's all-flash, and the VMware NSX network virtualization platform, connected over Mellanox's 40Gb/s Ethernet inbox driver with DPDK support running over SwitchX switches, ConnectX-3 Pro Network Interface Cards (NICs), and LinkX cables. Preliminary performance benchmarks have shown that customers running over 40Gb/s saw a great increase in overall cluster efficiency with the use of VMware Virtual SAN, including a threefold increase in application bandwidth.
