Exascale supercomputing

IBM and GENCI, the high performance computing agency in France, have signed a collaboration aimed at speeding up the path to exascale computing - the ability of a computing system to perform at least one exaflop, or a billion billion calculations, in one second. Read further...

Focus on Europe

Mateo Valero has received the Euro-Par Achievement Award 2015. Euro-Par is the major European conference series on parallel processing. Since the year 2008 the Euro-Par Steering Committee conveys the Euro-Par Achievement Award at the yearly Euro-Par conference to an individual who has made special contributions to parallel processing. The 2015 edition of Euro-Par was held in Vienna, Austria from August 24 to August 28, 2015. It was hosted at the Vienna University of Technology and was organized by the Research Group for Parallel Computing. Read further...

Mellanox Technologies Ltd.'s EDR 100Gb/s InfiniBand solutions have been selected by the KTH Royal Institute of Technology for use in their PDC Center for High Performance Computing (PDC Center). Mellanox's robust and flexible EDR InfiniBand solution offers higher interconnect speed, lower latency and smart accelerations to maximize efficiency and will enable the PDC Center to achieve world-leading data centre performance across a variety of applications, including advanced modelling for climate changes, brain functions and protein-drug interactions. The PDC Center is the latest deployment of Mellanox EDR InfiniBand technology to validate the expanding global adoption of this high-performance interconnect solution. The increasing use of InfiniBand technology was first illustrated in the TOP500 Supercomputers List in June 2015 with more than 50 percent of those included utilizing InfiniBand. Read further...

Applications

Researchers at the UPV/EHU-University of the Basque Country are using high-performance computing to simulate the processes that take place during the first moments of photosynthesis. Using quantum mechanics as the basis, UPV/EHU computer scientists, physicists and chemists are working together to produce simulations of the molecule in which photosynthesis occurs. They have executed an Octopus software package in the fastest supercomputers in Europe, and after incorporating various improvements, they have carried out the biggest simulations made in this field by efficiently using thousands of processors. Oracle has issued the results of its "Oracle Cloud Agility" study and revealed that businesses worldwide overestimate their agility. While a majority of businesses believe they are agile, Oracle's research highlights that many organisations cannot flexibly manage workloads or rapidly develop, test, and launch new applications, leaving them poorly prepared to deal with competitive threats. The study also found a lack of awareness among businesses around how technology, like Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), can be used to help address these challenges. Read further...
Rescale, an industry-leading simulation and high performance computing (HPC) platform provider, announced that the Europe region simulation and HPC platforms are now publicly available. Rescale's Europe region deployment of ScaleX Enterprise, ScaleX Pro, and ScaleX Developer provides European companies with the ability to instantly scale out their computer-aided engineering (CAE) simulations in an on-demand and highly secure HPC environment. While the ScaleX platforms have been globally available since May of 2015, this new Europe specific region deployment confines HPC hardware to Europe to accommodates companies with European data control restrictions that are interested in deploying Cloud solutions. With the standard ScaleX platform interface, Rescale’s Europe region platforms have, until now, been in private deployment with companies throughout central Europe. Read further...
