At ISC 2015 in Frankfurt, Germany,Primeur Magazinetalked with Marty Smuin, CEO of Adaptive Computing. Adaptive Computing has been attending the ISC events for quite some time and has been in the HPC business for many years. The company was started fourteen years ago and built some of the largest and most complex systems in the world for running its software platform. ISC is for Adaptive not only a place where it has the opportunity to connect with new customers but also has the chance to visit with many existing customers. Adaptive is a company that is on the move. It recently added a lot of new products to its platform. When people think of Adaptive, they primarily think of scheduling work flow management but the company is so much more than that. Read further...

IDC has delivered a report to the European Commission about the HPC developments in Europe. It contains an assessment of PC Action Plan Objectives set out a few years ago. The report also provides some recommendations. The report is now at the European Commission, who will study it, draw conclusions from it and use it in further development of the HPC actions. In general, IDC concludes Europe has made good progress in implementing HPC and exascale plans. Europe is now on par with other major HPC players in the world. In the recommendations IDC advices Europe to expand funding for HPC, concentrate on the whole software stack, and also look at the newly developing High Performance Data Analysis (HPDA) area. Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) will coordinate themselves to develop High Performance Computing (HPC) research and technology innovation. Both organisations have signed an agreement to help promoting "a globally competitive HPC value chain and flagship industry", echoing the European Union strategy in the domain. Read further...

Middleware

Intel has made available the latest release of its Intel Enterprise Edition for Lustre software. Not long ago storage for high performance computing (HPC) meant complexity and challenging management. HPC was the domain of government-sponsored research or data-intensive applications, like weather prediction or large-scale manufacturing in the aerospace and automotive sectors. Read further...

Compute Canada and its regional partners ACENET, Calcul Quebec, Compute Ontario and WestGrid will manage the procurement and investment of the $75 million investment to renew and consolidate the national platform for advanced research computing. Funding for this investment is through the Canada Foundation for Innovation's (CFI) Cyberinfrastructure Initiative competition launched in 2014. The federal investment of $30 million leverages an additional $45 million in provincial and institutional support. Read further...
DataDirect Networks (DDN) announced the recent Securities Technology Analysis Center (STAC) benchmark results in which the DDN EXAScaler storage solution set new public records for multiple workload types and sizes, including large and small workloads as well as I/O and compute-intensive workloads. DDN storage outperformed SSD-based solutions to deliver higher performance, productivity and density at lower cost. The independent and audited STAC-M3 Benchmark results validate DDN's leadership in providing high performance at scale for financial services organisations. Read further...
Cray Inc. has issued financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2015. Revenue for the second quarter was $186.2 million, which compares with $85.1 million in the second quarter of 2014. Net income for the second quarter was $5.8 million, or $0.14 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $6.7 million, or $0.18 per diluted share in the second quarter of 2014. Non-GAAP net income was $12.4 million, or $0.30 per diluted share for the second quarter, compared to non-GAAP net loss of $8.6 million, or $0.22 per diluted share for the same period last year. Inova Translational Medicine Institute (ITMI) has selected SGI to enable researchers to obtain insights from its premier genomic databases, allowing them to diagnose patients with more accuracy and speed, ultimately ensuring a higher level of treatment and care for the diverse population it serves. ITMI's genomic database is one of the largest in the world. Read further...
SGI Japan Ltd has installed an SGI virtual reality (VR) system at the Komatsu Ltd., Oyama plant at Tochigi, Japan. The system is expected to streamline the design and development of construction equipment and support testing for machine operators and service engineers with realistic simulations. Read further...
Intel Corporation and Micron Technology Inc. have unveiled 3D XPoint technology, a non-volatile memory that has the potential to revolutionize any device, application or service that benefits from fast access to large sets of data. Now in production, 3D XPoint technology is a major breakthrough in memory process technology and the first new memory category since the introduction of NAND flash in 1989. Read further...

Supercomputer Skyeye-1, capable of a quadrillion computing operations per second, will support space exploration by the world's largest radio telescope based in southwest China's Guizhou Province. Assembly of the telescope, with a dish the size of 30 football fields and located deep in the mountains of Guizhou, is underway, according to Dawning Information Industry Co., which participates in its construction. CVS Health and IBM will use predictive analytics and Watson cognitive computing to transform care management services for patients with chronic disease. The partnership will enable health care practitioners, including those across the CVS Health enterprise, to use Watson to advance care management beyond programmes and services typically available today. Watson's cognitive computing capabilities interact in natural language, read and understand vast amounts of information, and continuously learn. The offering would enable health care practitioners to quickly and easily gain insights from an unprecedented mix of health information sources such as medical health records, pharmacy and medical claims information, environmental factors, and fitness devices to help individuals stay on track with their care and meet health goals. Historically, successful trait selection in plant breeding has involved manual measurement of individual plants. This requirement limits the number of plants that can be evaluated, and the scope of properties that can be measured. A new grant from the Department of Energy to researchers at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center and multiple partner institutions, including the University of Illinois, will fund the development of a system to automate the measurement of plants using cameras and other sensors mounted on drones, tractors, and robots, and analysis of the resulting large data sets to facilitate the development of high-yielding strains of sorghum, a key bioenergy crop. The $8 million grant was one of several awarded by the DOE Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) Transportation Energy Resources from Renewable Agriculture (TERRA) programme. Argonne scientists used Mira to identify and improve a new mechanism for eliminating friction, which fed into the development of a hybrid material that exhibited superlubricity at the macroscale for the first time. Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) researchers helped enable the groundbreaking simulations by overcoming a performance bottleneck that doubled the speed of the team's code. Read further...
Researchers have developed an ultrafast light-emitting device that can flip on and off 90 billion times a second and could form the basis of optical computing. At its most basic level, your smart phone's battery is powering billions of transistors using electrons to flip on and off billions of times per second. But if microchips could use photons instead of electrons to process and transmit data, computers could operate even faster. Read further...
The SGI UV 300H is now SAP-certified to run the SAP HANA platform in controlled availability at 20-sockets - delivering up to 15 terabytes (TB) of in-memory computing capacity in a single node.
