PRACEdays15, which ran from 26 to 28 May, 2015 in Dublin, Ireland, marked another successful edition of the annual PRACE Scientific and Industrial Conference. The Irish Centre for High End Computing hosted the conference and satellite events locally and, with this year's theme being "Enable Science Foster Industry", attracted close to 200 experts from academia and industry. The two satellite events focusing on Women in HPC and Exascale European projects proved very popular on 25 and 26 May and the EESI2 Project held its final conference on 28 and 29 May to round off the week. The PRACE User Forum invited all participants to an Open Session on Wednesday afternoon. Read further...
ESADE and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) have agreed on lines of collaboration that will facilitate scientific progress by bringing science and business closer together. The agreement opens up the possibility of the two institutions jointly organising educational programmes, sharing information in order to undertake European projects, advising one another, and launching other cooperation initiatives. Read further...
Cisco is joining CERN openlab, CERN's platform for science and industry partnerships. As part of the CERN openlab initiative, CERN and Cisco are both assigning a team of experts with the aim to develop cutting-edge, highly secure computing infrastructure technologies, capable to deal with large and ever increasing amounts of data. Their mandate is to develop ground-breaking ideas and new approaches for next-generation computing systems. They will investigate novel concepts that build on the latest evolution of hardware, heterogeneous system designs and increasing functionality of the network interface hardware. Read further...
Bright Computing, a provider of hardware-agnostic cluster and Cloud management software, has introduced a significant update to distribution-agnostic Bright Cluster Manager for Apache Hadoop at the Hadoop Summit North America 2015. Bright Computing was in booth S4 at the Summit, held June 9-11, 2015, in San Jose, California. Visitors to the booth could learn more about how the Version 7.1 release eases the burden of managing Hadoop by broadening and deepening the functionality of its offering. Read further...
The 2015 PRACE ISC Award and Gauss Award will be given to two deserving European researchers reporting on their work focused on the development of energy-efficient supercomputers. These two research papers were selected by the respective award committees from the 37 submissions accepted for presentation at the 2015 ISC High Performance Research Paper Session. Read further...
Edinburgh scientists have devised a new theory explaining turbulent plasmas - high energy, electrically conducting fluids. Their work could inform potential applications, from tokamak fusion reactors to new understanding of magnetic fields in cosmology. Read further...
Honest Café, a new type of "unmanned" coffee house in London, is using Watson Analytics to unearth client insights to help determine everything from coffee products and pricing, to marketing and promotions. Honest Café is a new venture from Revive Vending, one of the major vending service providers in the UK, designed to encourage healthy eating and social engagement. Read further...
The European Commission has signed a 13 million euro contract with networking organisation GÉANT to expand connectivity in the Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries. The project aims at creating a regional high-speed Internet network dedicated to research and education (R&E) across Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. It will interconnect the National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in the EaP partner countries and integrate them in the pan-European GÉANT network. Read further...

Through a competitive bid Idaho National Laboratory (INL) in the USA has selected SGI to support its energy research and simulations, through SGI's valued partner ComnetCo Inc. INL is part of the Department of Energy's (DOE) complex of national laboratories. The laboratory performs work in each of the strategic goal areas of DOE: energy, national security, science and environment. INL is the USA's leading centre for nuclear energy research and development. Day-to-day management and operation of the laboratory is the responsibility of Battelle Energy Alliance. The laboratory develops software that helps scientists analyze research through simulations, which is the key application running on the new SGI system. Read further...
Liz King, senior vice president of worldwide sales, has been named to The Channel Company's prestigious 2015 CRN Women of the Channel. The annual list honours outstanding female executives across vendor channel organisations, distributors, solution providers and other women prominently involved in the IT channel ecosystem for their successes and the far-reaching impact they are having on the technology industry going forward. As part of its ongoing mission to connect researchers to the data and resources needed to advance environmental science through its N-Wave science network, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is building a private optical network powered by Ciena's converged packet optical platforms. The new 100G network will connect four geographically dispersed facilities in the Washington, D.C. metro area, including McLean, Virginia and Suitland, Silver Spring and College Park, Maryland. It will enable NOAA to support bandwidth-intensive applications and programmes such as the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite series R (GOES-R), and the next-generation national weather observation satellite programme, which is working to advance weather and climate science and services. NASA has released data showing how temperature and rainfall patterns worldwide may change through the year 2100 because of growing concentrations of greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere. The dataset, which is available to the public, shows projected changes worldwide on a regional level in response to different scenarios of increasing carbon dioxide simulated by 21 climate models. The high-resolution data, which can be viewed on a daily timescale at the scale of individual cities and towns, will help scientists and planners conduct climate risk assessments to better understand local and global effects of hazards, such as severe drought, floods, heat waves and losses in agriculture productivity. As part of the supercomputer Blue Waters project, NCSA is substantially upgrading its networking capacity, giving researchers across the country the ability to move data more quickly than ever before. Read further...
The heat that builds up in the shuttling of current in electronics is an important obstacle to packing more computing power into ever-smaller devices: Excess heat can cause them to fail or sap their efficiency. Now, X-ray studies at the Department of Energy's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory have for the first time observed an exotic property that could warp the electronic structure of a material in a way that reduces heat buildup and improves performance in ever-smaller computer components. Read further...
The University of Sydney celebrated the launch of its first High Performance Computer (HPC) service, which will allow researchers to leverage Big Data for research and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Available at no cost to University of Sydney researchers across all disciplines, Artemis has been developed by the University in partnership with Dell Australia. The supercomputer commissioned by the University of Sydney is helping to investigate the secrets of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Read further...
Benco Dental, a large privately-owned dental supply distributor in the United States, is using Watson Analytics to unearth Big Data insights to better gauge the true effectiveness of marketing and business programmes. Read further...
The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego, has been awarded a three-year National Science Foundation (NSF) grant valued at almost $1 million to help three of the region's school districts develop model "villages" for introducing and sustaining up-to-date computer science courses in their curriculum. Read further...
A team of IBM researchers in Zurich, Switzerland with support from colleagues in Yorktown Heights, New York has developed a relatively simple, robust and versatile process for growing crystals made from compound semiconductor materials that will allow them be integrated onto silicon wafers - an important step toward making future computer chips that will allow integrated circuits to continue shrinking in size and cost even as they increase in performance. Read further...
For engine designers in the digital age, time is money. And that time is measured in computer cycles. Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory are partnering with Convergent Science Inc. (CSI), to speed up a key piece of modelling and simulation software to ensure those cycles are used as effectively as possible, reducing product development time and resulting in better engines and savings for consumers. The scale of the speed gains were recently demonstrated when researchers ran the largest engine simulation to date on more than 4,000 computer cores. Read further...
