The German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat) proposes that the German Tier 2 supercomputer centres should form a collaboration network for High-Performance Computing. In this way, they should better be able to serve their scientific users and collaborate with the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing that in a similar way organises the Tier 1 supercomputer centres in Germany. The Wissenschaftsrat also says the cycle of renewing supercomputers should stay high because of the energy costs that drop with each new computer generation. Read further...

Th European Commission unveiled its detailed plans to create a Digital Single Market. Big data, Cloud services and the Internet of Things are central to the EU's competitiveness. Therefore, the European Commission aims to build a data economy. Data is often considered as a catalyst for economic growth, innovation and digitisation across all economic sectors, particularly for SMEs, start-ups, and for society as a whole. Big Data and High Performance Computing are also changing the way research is performed and knowledge is shared, as part of a transition towards a more efficient and responsive 'Open Science'. Read further...
Biology is rapidly acquiring the character of a data science. Billions of data points on genes, proteins and other molecules are compiled in large files and systematically studied. This should lead to more knowledge and understanding about living organisms, including crops and livestock that are the basis of food security for the world population. These are some of points raised by Dick de Ridder in his inaugural address upon accepting the post of Professor of Bioinformatics at Wageningen University on 30 April 2015. Read further...
A research paper in the area of in-memory architecture, jointly submitted by a team of seven researchers representing the Juelich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), IBM Germany and the IBM Watson Research Center in the US, has been selected to receive the inaugural Hans Meuer Award. The awarding will take place at the ISC High Performance conference on Monday, July 13. Read further...
ADVA Optical Networking has launched its new ConnectGuard solution. Engineered specifically to provide the most advanced data protection possible, ConnectGuard presents service providers and enterprises with unique solutions to secure their connectivity networks. ConnectGuard is available in two distinct variants. Firstly, ConnectGuard Optical for the ADVA FSP 3000 provides robust transport layer security and is ideal for data centre interconnection applications that need advanced protection for the transportation of enormous data volumes. Secondly, ConnectGuard Ethernet for the ADVA FSP 150 delivers Ethernet layer security and is critical for protecting data as it travels across third-party packet networks. Read further...
