Exascale supercomputing

The second European Exascale Software Initiative, EESI2, is organizing its final international conference on May 28 noon - May 29 noon, 2015 in Dublin, back-to-back with PRACEdays15 at the AVIVA Stadium. EESI2 is an EC-funded FP7 project. The main goals of EESI2 are to elaborate an evolutive European vision and roadmap and to propose recommendations to address the challenges of Extreme Data and Extreme Computing on the new generation of Exascale computers expected in 2020. Women in HPC is a hands-on introduction to HPC, taking place Monday 25 May to Tuesday 26 May, 2015. The satellite event "Enabling Exascale in Europe for Industry" will be organized on May 26, 2015 at the PRACEdays15 in Dublin. Read further...

HP has introduced HP Helion Rack, a new pre-configured, pre-tuned and pre-tested private Cloud solution, based on OpenStack and Cloud Foundry technologies integrated with HP server hardware. HP Helion Rack is designed to help enterprise IT departments speed their Cloud deployments, avoiding months designing, developing and deploying a private Cloud, by integrating Cloud management software and industry leading infrastructure with best practices. The UK Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) has awarded SGI a contract and will be one of the first customers to install SGI's record-breaking SGI ICE XA systems for its new supercomputer. The new system will be comprised of two SGI ICE XA systems, SGI's sixth generation and newest high performance computing system. The SGI ICE platform has already achieved a number of successive world record benchmarks including Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) MPI2007 benchmarks for the Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 processor, making SGI ICE the world's most powerful distributed-memory supercomputer. Cray Inc. has been awarded a significant contract to provide Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS), a global oil-and-gas company, with a Cray XC40 supercomputer and a Cray Sonexion 2000 storage system. The five-petaflop Cray supercomputer will be one of the largest systems Cray has delivered to a commercial customer, and among the largest supercomputers deployed in the commercial sector. Headquartered in Oslo, Norway with regional centres in London, Singapore and Houston, PGS creates high-resolution seismic maps and 3-dimensional (3D) models of the earth's sub-surface, which oil and gas companies use to explore and produce offshore reserves worldwide. The fact that the neutron is slightly more massive than the proton is the reason why atomic nuclei have exactly those properties that make our world and ultimately our existence possible. Eighty years after the discovery of the neutron, a team of physicists from France, Germany, and Hungary headed by Zoltán Fodor, a researcher from Wuppertal, has finally calculated the tiny neutron-proton mass difference. The findings, which have been published in the current edition ofScience, are considered a milestone by many physicists and confirm the theory of the strong interaction. SGI Japan Ltd., part of SGI, a global expert in high-performance solutions for compute, data analytics and data management, announced that the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) chose to deploy the SGI ICE X distributed memory cluster server. The new supercomputer will be deployed in NIMS' new Numerical Material Simulator, a supercomputer system that will serve as the foundation of the Institute's computational materials science research, enabling NIMS to expand the scale of its numerical models and increase the processing volume of its current research. Engineers at the University of California, San Diego, have developed a new family of methods to significantly increase the speed of time-resolved numerical simulations in computational grand challenge problems. Such problems often arise from the high-resolution approximation of the partial differential equations governing complex flows of fluids or plasmas. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the launch of the National Supercomputing Mission. This is a visionary programme to enable India to leapfrog to the league of world class computing power nations.
