At SC14 in New Orleans,Primeur Magazinehad the opportunity to interview Michael Wong, CEO of the OpenMP Architecture Review Board (ARB). Michael Wong toldPrimeur Magazinethat OpenMP up to now has been a kind of de facto standard in about being the most capable parallel language. The OpenMP team wants to make sure that it's easy to take any code from any other parallel language and convert it into OpnMP. The team wants to show that not all on that source to source conversion point of view can be done and if it can be done, then it is something that we need when there is a need to improve. Ultimately, everybody wins. OpenMP hopes that ultimately the industry wins. Because there are a lot of different parallel languages out there, it would be good if we can see that, stated Michael Wong. Certainly, there is an amount of misconception that OpenMP is still the old open OpenMP. OpenMP changed its mission statement this year, essentially broadening its mandate to cover all forms of parallelism. Read further...

Exascale supercomputing

In the 2020s, so-called exascale supercomputers will achieve a performance of more than one billion billion operations a second (the number 1 followed by 18 zeroes): a thousand times more powerful than current systems. Numascale, Supermicro, and AMD have introduced the world's largest shared memory system to date. The system features 5184 CPU cores and 20.7 TBytes of shared memory and handles massive amounts of data as the first part of a new large Cloud computing facility for Big Data Analytics. Numascale has successfully installed this large shared memory Numascale/Supermicro/AMD system at a customer data centre facility in North America. The system is the first part of a large Cloud computing facility for analytics and simulation of sensor data combined with historical data. Read further...
Asetek, a global supplier of computer liquid cooling solutions, has received an order for five RackCDU to expand on the University of Tromsø’s (UiT) existing installation in Norway. The order is of strategic importance to Asetek as it is a repeat order following 12 months of real life pilot testing and builds on UiT's previously announced programme to reduce energy consumption in the University's new High Performance Computing (HPC) facility. In addition, this installation of RackCDU D2C is the first to enable waste heat recovery by using the heat from the servers to heat the university campus. Read further...
GENCI, the French HPC agency, has acquired in June 2014 a new 2.1 Pflops large scale supercomputer called OCCIGEN (pronounced oxygen). This Bull system is installed at the National Computer Center for Higher Education (Cines, Centre informatique national de l'enseignement supérieur), one of the three national computing centres in France. It multiplies by more than 8 times the computing resources available at Cines and allows GENCI to provide French scientists with a great boost of the global capacity available reaching a total of 5.7 Pflops. Eurotech, an expert in green supercomputing technology, has launched the HiVe (High Velocity) system, the new addition to the Aurora line of supercomputers. The IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center in the Czech Republic selected an SGI supercomputer to advance research in a variety of fields including nanotechnology, computational chemistry, hydrology, engineering, material science and drug development. The SGI supercomputer will provide the centre with theoretical performance at 2 petaflops, exceeding the performance of the current Anselm supercomputer by nearly 20 times. The large cluster, which will be put into operation in 2015, will be among the 50 largest supercomputers in the world, and will become the largest Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor-based cluster in Europe. Altera Corporation and IBM have unveiled the industry's first FPGA-based acceleration platform that coherently connects an FPGA to a POWER8 CPU leveraging IBM's Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface (CAPI). The reconfigurable hardware accelerator features shared virtual memory between the FPGA and processor which significantly improves system performance, efficiency and flexibility in high-performance computing (HPC) and data centre applications. Data Vortex, a new supercomputer provider focusing on complicated applications critical to engineering, basic and applied scientific research, analytics mathematics and computer science, is taking orders for its first commercially available high performance computing (HPC) system, the DV206, consisting of 32 commodity dual processor servers connected with a Data Vortex Network System and Data Vortex Network interface cards. Kitware Inc. is working with NVIDIA to develop several powerful enhancements for the field of high performance computing (HPC) visualization. Among these is a new Visualization Toolkit (VTK) rendering back-end, which targets graphics processing units (GPUs) and takes advantage of the flexible programmable pipelines available in modern systems. This development has already resulted in significant improvements in rendering performance, especially with large geometries (20 million+ triangles) that can now be rendered over 100 times faster. NVIDIA is developing an enhanced version of the widely used PGI optimizing compilers which will allow developers to quickly develop new applications or run Linux x86-based GPU-accelerated applications on IBM POWER CPU systems with minimal effort. The PGI optimizing Fortran, C and C++ compilers for POWER will provide a user interface, language features, parallel programming features and optimization capabilities that are identical to those available on PGI Linux x86 compilers. Mellanox Technologies Ltd.'s InfiniBand continued its leadership as the most deployed interconnect solution on the TOP500 list of supercomputers. The number of InfiniBand-based supercomputers increased 8.7 percent year-over-year to 225, representing 45 percent of the TOP500. Mellanox InfiniBand is the interconnect of choice for Petascale computing Petaflop capable systems, connecting 24 Petascale-performance systems on the list. Overall, the number of Mellanox FDR InfiniBand connected systems grew 1.8X year-over-year connecting 141 systems, showing the increased demand for higher performance, scalability and efficiency. Mellanox Technologies Ltd. has introduced its Switch-IB family of EDR 100Gb/s InfiniBand switches achieves world record port-to-port latency of less than 90ns. Switch-IB has 36-ports of 100Gb/s to provide 7.2Tb/s of switching capacity and ultra-low latency and power consumption.
