What do the DNA in Australian seaweed, Amazon River water, tropical plants, and forest soil all have in common? Lots, according to scientists. And understanding the genetic similarities of disparate life forms could enable researchers to produce compounds for new medicines, eco-friendly materials, more resilient crops, and cleaner air, water, and energy. Comparing the proteins encoded by the genes from a variety of life forms is the goal of Uncovering Genome Mysteries, a new project hosted on IBM's World Community Grid that debuted on October 21. Administered by University of New South Wales (UNSW) Australia and the Oswaldo Cruz Institute of Brazil, the project seeks to make about 20 quadrillion comparisons of 200 million proteins underlying a wide variety of organisms. Read further...
To kick off crowd computing project World Community Grid (WCG)'s 10th anniversary celebrations, WCG is launching Uncovering Genome Mysteries to compare hundreds of millions of genes from many organisms that have never been studied before, helping scientists unearth some of the hidden superpowers of the natural world. Read further...
University of New South Wales (UNSW) scientists hope to unlock the secrets of millions of marine microbes from waters as far apart as Sydney's Botany Bay and the Amazon River in Brazil, with the help of an international team of volunteers sharing their spare computer capacity to create a research crowd computer. A new computational method has made it possible to detect genetic changes responsible for the onset and progression of tumours in a simple, quick and precise way. The SMUFIN - Somatic Mutations Finder - method is capable of analyzing the complete genome of a tumor and identifying its mutations in a few hours. In addition, it is able to identify alterations which had previously not been revealed, even using methods which require the use of supercomputers over several weeks. Read further...
In response to the community of Europe's national research and education networking organisations' (NRENs') wishes, the GÉANT Association has been formed by re-organising TERENA and DANTE under a unified governance structure. The membership of TERENA and the shareholders of DANTE voted to proceed during meetings held in Berlin on 7 October. This restructuring marks a new phase in almost thirty years of collaborative research and education networking in Europe. Read further...
ISC organizers will be accepting proposals until February 15, 2015 for full- or half-day workshops for the ISC High Performance'15 Conference, which will be held July 12-16, 2015 in Frankfurt, Germany. The goal of the workshops is to provide a focused, in-depth platform for presentations, discussion and interaction in a particular subject area. They are inviting workshop proposals on topics related to all aspects of research, development, and application of large-scale, high-performance experimental and commercial systems. Read further...
The National Supercomputer Centre at Linköping University (NSC Sweden) and Meteo France have selected Mellanox's FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand solutions for mission critical, high-performance computing applications. Deployments by these two leading organisations bolster Mellanox's continued growth and expansion into Europe's high-performance computing landscape. Read further...
A team led by astronomers from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy has created the first three-dimensional map of the 'adolescent' Universe, just 3 billion years after the Big Bang. Applying a new technique analogous to x-ray computer-tomographic (CT) imaging used in medicine, the researchers measured the light from a dense grid of distant background galaxies probing the Universe from multiple locations, and then combined the data to construct a 3D map of the intervening matter. This map, millions of light years across, provides a tantalizing glimpse of large structures in the 'cosmic web', which forms the backbone of cosmic structure. Read further...
What does it mean to simulate the human brain? Why is it important to do so? And is it even possible to simulate the brain separately from the body it exists in? These questions are discussed in a new paper published in the scientific journalNeuron. Read further...

High performance computing (HPC) - also known as supercomputing - involves solving complex problems across a range of disciplines in business and science using sophisticated supercomputers. This fast-growing sector is in need of more resources for the application scientists who are not experts in code optimization but aim to maximize the performance of their HPC applications. Intel has aimed to fill that gap with its suite of Cluster Tools designed to develop, analyze, and optimize performance of parallel applications on Linux or Windows clusters. Intel has teamed up with Apress to publish "Optimizing HPC Applications with Intel Cluster Tools": a guide for designing, developing, and optimizing parallel programmes on Intel platforms.
