The signature of the Big Data Value Public Private Partnership (BDV PPP) took place on 13 October 2014 at the Hotel Silken Berlaymont in Brussels, by the European Commission Vice-President Neelie Kroes and the President of the Big Data Value Association Jan Sundelin, TIE Kinetix. The BDV PPP signature is the first step towards building a thriving data community in the European Union. Already in November 2013 in Vilnius Vice President Neelie Kroes called for the creation of a European Public Partner Partnership for Big Data. Vice President Kroes highlighted that Big Data is becoming the fuel for innovation, powering and energizing European economy. Read further...
Predicting floods following extreme rainfall in the central Andes is enabled by a new method. Climate change has made these events more frequent and more severe in recent decades. Now complex networks analysis of satellite weather data makes it possible to produce a robust warning system for the first time, a study to be published in the journalNature Communicationsshows. This might allow for improved disaster preparedness. As the complex systems technique builds upon a mathematical comparison that can be utilised for any time series data, the approach could be applied to extreme events in all sorts of complex systems. Spintronics is an emerging field of technology where devices work by manipulating the spin of electrons rather than their charge. The field can bring significant advantages to computer technology, combining higher speeds with lower energy consumption. Spintronic circuits need ways to control electron spin without interference from electron charge. Scientists at EPFL, working with Université Paris-Sud and Paul Scherrer Institut, have discovered that a common insulating material behaves as a perfect spintronic conductor because it is not affected by background electron charge. In addition, the material's properties make it an ideal platform for directly observing a strange subatomic particle that could one day lead to a different, more stable type of quantum computers. Read further...
Magnetic materials form the basis of most hard disc drives as they are able to store data. A team from the University of Sheffield's Faculty of Engineering have been investigating whether they could also be used to perform calculations, and so take on the role of a computer's central processing unit (CPU). Two research teams working in the same laboratories at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia have found distinct solutions to a critical challenge that has held back the realisation of super powerful quantum computers. The teams created two types of quantum bits, or "qubits" - the building blocks for quantum computers - that each process quantum data with an accuracy above 99%. The two findings have been published simultaneously in the journalNature Nanotechnology. Read further...
IBM and Metropolitan Health have introduced the first commercial application of Watson in Africa. IBM's Watson is a groundbreaking computing platform able to interact in natural language. 100 petabytes. That's how much data is currently stored at the Department of Energy's (DOE) National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC). And it's increasing by 40 percent to 60 percent annually. That's a far cry from NERSC's early days. When NERSC first opened its doors in 1974, files were typically measured in megabytes. In 1976, the centre - then located at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and still known as the National Magnetic Fusion Energy Computer Center (NMFECC) - could store a whopping 19,200 megabytes of data, primarily on on-line disks and nine-track tapes.
