High performance computing researchers at Sandia National Laboratories are working with the Department of Energy (DOE) and other national laboratories and institutions to develop and apply the most complete climate and Earth system model, to address the most challenging and demanding climate change issues. Eight national laboratories, including Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), are combining forces with the National Center for Atmospheric Research, four academic institutions and one private-sector company, to start work on the most complete climate and Earth system model yet. High performance computing will be used for the project to address challenging and demanding climate change issues. Other participating national laboratories include Argonne, Brookhaven, Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, Oak Ridge and Sandia. Read further...
The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) has accepted 20 projects into the NERSC Exascale Scientific Applications Programme (NESAP), a new collaborative effort that partners NERSC, Intel and Cray resources with code teams across the U.S. to prepare for Cori, the centre's next-generation supercomputer. Cloud computing is at the core of a new grant to Rice University computer scientist Christopher Jermaine, who plans to develop tools that will allow research and industry to make better use of massive data sets without having to rely on supercomputers. The National Science Foundation (NSF) will send $1.2 million to Christopher Jermaine's Rice group over three years to help optimize statistical machine learning techniques for distributed computing systems. At VMworld 2014, VMware, NVIDIA and Google have launched a collaborative effort to deliver high-performance virtual desktops and workstation-class graphics to Google Chromebooks. Showcased as a technology preview, the solution demonstrates the next generation of VMware Blast Performance and NVIDIA GRID vGPU technology to satisfy customers' most demanding visual computing needs. The joint effort is expected to expand the hardware options for high-performance virtual desktops, enabling customers to select their system of choice without compromise. Read further...
At VMworld 2014, HP and VMware have expanded a long-standing relationship to help customers gain competitive advantage by adopting the software-defined data centre and hybrid Cloud. This announcement includes the general availability of both the standalone HP-VMware networking solution, as well as the solution delivered as part of HP Converged Systems. The companies also announced HP Helion OpenStack will support enterprise-class VMware virtualization technologies. SoftLayer, an IBM company, plans to launch its first Australian data centre in Melbourne in September. It will be the latest of 15 new data centres that IBM plans to open as part of a $1.2 billion dollar global investment to strengthen and extend its Cloud services in Asia Pacific and around the world. The new onshore SoftLayer data centre will meet Australian organisations' demands for secure, in-country enterprise-grade IBM Cloud services that can deliver hybrid, private and public Cloud environments. Cancer radiation treatment is a tricky process. Medical researchers and physicians must walk the delicate line of delivering just enough radiation to kill tumours while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Current radiation treatment relies on imaging from computed tomography (CT) scans, which are taken prior to treatment to determine the tumour's location. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, factory revenue in the worldwide server market increased 2.5% year over year to $12.6 billion in the second quarter of 2014 (2Q14). Server unit shipments improved 1.2% year over year in 2Q14 to 2.2 million units as investments in hyperscale data centre capacity were largely offset by consolidation, which continued to be a strategic focus for many large and small customers around the globe.
