Quantum computers are thought to be in line to revolutionise research due to their enormous data crunching capabilities, which will force banks to change their encryption systems. Quantum computers, once they become a reality, are expected to provide the capabilities to perform parallel computations on a massive scale. They are subject of intense research in two directions. The first focus is in experimental physics, whereby scientists are building hardware systems in which qubits - the data storage units, such as electrons or atoms, can assume two quantum states simultaneously and perform computations. The second focus involves a theoretical component, where researchers develop algorithms to be the basis of software that will allow the use of quantum computers. Read further...
From 7th to 10th July, twenty-four budding engineers from across the UK recently took on the challenge of designing future aircraft at the University of Southampton. Organised by The Smallpeice Trust and delivered in partnership with the University's Faculty of Engineering and the Environment and Microsoft, the course opened up the eyes of the 16 and 17 year-old students, showing them how computers influence how we live, what we do and where we travel. When a two-body relation becomes a three-body relation, the behaviour of the system changes and typically becomes more complex. While the basic physics of two interacting particles is well understood, the mathematical description of a three- or many-body system becomes increasingly difficult, such that calculating the dynamics can blast the capacities of even modern supercomputers. However, under certain conditions, the quantum mechanical three-body problem may have a universal scaling solution. The predictions of such a model have now been confirmed experimentally by physicists of Heidelberg University. The scientists under Prof. Dr. Matthias Weidemüller investigated three-particle molecules, known as trimers, under exotic conditions. The scientific results were published inPhysical Review Letters. The European Commission has received an open letter from a number of scientists expressing concerns about the EU's Human Brain Project, its scope and governance. The European Commission (EC) expressed the intention to take critical signals seriously and to welcome debate. The EC will try to address concerns, while bearing in mind that, overall, Brain Science is, in Europe as in the world, an increasingly diverse and very big community, with tens of thousands of actors in neuroscience alone.
