PREFORMA aims to establish a set of tools and procedures for gaining full control over the technical properties of digital content intended for long-term preservation by memory institutions and to establish a long-term sustainable ecosystem around the developed tools with a variety of stakeholder groups, among which developers, digital preservationists and standardisation bodies. To this purpose, a PREFORMA call for tender has been published on June 12th, 2014. The proposal submission deadline is August 12th, 2014. The budget amounts to 2.805.000 euro. Read further...
It is the breakthrough that physicists and chemists around the world have long anticipated and it will play a pivotal role in information technology in coming years. Researchers at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) have managed, for the first time, to directly observe the 100 percent spin polarization of a Heusler compound. Heusler alloys are composed of several metallic elements arranged in a lattice structure. They are among those materials that potentially can be used for ever smaller data storage components with ever greater storage capacity. However, doubts have been recently expressed as to whether Heusler materials are actually suitable for this purpose. Read further...

A radical new approach to analysing sedimentary basins also harnesses technology in a completely novel way. An international research group, led by the University of Sydney, will use Big Data sets and exponentially increased computing power to model the interaction between processes on the earth's surface and deep below it in 'five dimensions'. As announced by the Federal Minister for Education, the University's School of Geosciences will lead the Basin GENESIS Hub that has received $5.4 million over five years from the Australian Research Council (ARC) and industry partners. At California's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the world's most powerful computers are working on some of our most fundamental questions about the universe. The Sierra supercomputer, for example, is delving into the Big Bang and trying to figure out why elementary particles have mass. But Sierra is also solving problems that are closer to home. This supercomputer and more recently the world's second most powerful computer called Titan at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee have been helping GE engineers to build a better jet engine.
