According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, factory revenue in the worldwide server market decreased -2.2% year over year to $10.9 billion in the first quarter of 2014 (1Q14). This is the fifth consecutive quarter that the server market has experienced a year-over-year decline in worldwide revenue. Server unit shipments improved 2.1% year over year in 1Q14 to 2.1 million units as investments in hyperscale data centre capacity were largely offset by consolidation, which continued to be a strategic focus for many large and small customers around the globe. Fujitsu's invention of high-dimensional interconnect technology, which is used in the K computer Fujitsu jointly developed with RIKEN as well as the company's own FUJITSU Supercomputer PRIMEHPC FX10, was awarded the Imperial Invention Prize. This prize is given to the most outstanding invention at the National Commendation for Invention sponsored by the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation. NEC Corporation has received orders for the SX-ACE, a new vector supercomputer, from the Cyberscience Center of Tohoku University, a national university corporation, the Cybermedia Center (CMC) of Osaka University, also a national university corporation, and the National Institute for Environmental Studies, an independent administrative agency. Wayne State University (WSU) is the recipient of Silicon Mechanics' 3rd Annual Research Cluster Grant, a programme in which the company and its partners are donating a complete high-performance compute cluster. The university, located in midtown Detroit, is one of the nation's 50 largest public universities, with annual research expenditures of nearly $260 million, and among only 3.5 percent of U.S. universities with the Carnegie Foundation's highest research classification.
