Exascale supercomputing

Cray Inc. has been awarded a $70 million contract to provide a next-generation Cray XC supercomputer to the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC). Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), which manages NERSC, collaborated with Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories to develop the technical requirements for the system. Named "Cori" after bio-chemist and Nobel Laureate Gerty Cori, NERSC's next-generation Cray XC supercomputer will provide its vast user community with an advanced supercomputing resource to support the Center's large production workload. NERSC supports more than 5,000 scientists annually on more than 700 projects in the areas of climate modelling, biology, environmental sciences, combustion, materials science, chemistry, geosciences, fusion energy, astrophysics, nuclear and high-energy physics, and other disciplines, along with scientific visualization of massive data sets. The Governor of Massachusetts has unveiled the Massachusetts Open Cloud (MOC) Project, an exciting collaboration at which DataDirect Networks (DDN) held a front row seat. The MOC Project draws from all five MGHPCC universities, including overall project leadership from Boston University, operational leadership from Harvard University, development leadership from Northeastern University, community building from MIT, and related research by faculty from the universities - UMass, BU, Northeastern, Harvard, and MIT. The Human Brain Project (HBP) is seeking High Performance Computing technology solutions that meet the requirements of this groundbreaking project. The mission of HBP's High Performance Computing (HPC) Platform Subproject is to build the supercomputing and data hard and software infrastructure required to run cellular brain model simulations the size of a full human brain. This infrastructure will be made available to the HBP consortium and the wider community. The central element of the HPC Platform is the HBP Supercomputer, the project's main production system located at Jülich Supercomputing Centre. Over the next decade, the HBP Supercomputer will be built in stages to arrive at the exascale capability needed for cellular simulations of the complete human brain. Read further...
Following the meeting of the Board of Directors on 29 April 2014, Bull has released its first-quarter 2014 revenues. Revenues in the first quarter of 2014 totalled 268.4 million euro, up 1.2% at constant exchange rates and up 0.3% unadjusted. Business levels saw solid growth in Europe, were stable in France, but were adversely affected outside Europe by weakness in North Africa. Order intake grew 15.1% to 272.9 million euro, resulting in a book-to-bill ratio of 102%. Read further...

Cray Inc. has issued financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2014. All figures are based on U.S. GAAP unless otherwise noted. Given the nature of the business, the company's results can fluctuate dramatically quarter-to-quarter. Revenue for the quarter was $55.1 million compared to $79.5 million in the prior year period. The company reported a net loss for the quarter of $12.9 million, or $0.34 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $7.6 million, or $0.20 per diluted share in the first quarter of 2013. Non-GAAP net loss was $17.6 million, or $0.46 per diluted share for the quarter, compared to $8.4 million, or $0.23 per diluted share for the same period last year. Read further...
