RSC Group, a Russian developer and integrator of innovative HPC and data centre solutions, demonstrated a revolutionary RSC PetaStream ultra-high density solution with massive-parallel architecture, direct liquid cooling and the newest Intel Xeon Phi 7120D setting one more world record of computing density of 1.2 PFlops peak performance per rack within just 1 m2, or 11 ft2, footprint. It happened at PCT-2014, a major Russian HPC conference. RSC PetaStream became even 20% more powerful versus its first announcement with the previous world record of 1 PFlops per rack at SC'13 in Denver, USA. RSC's new technology breakthrough was achieved with the newest Intel Xeon Phi 7120D coprocessor just launched in March, 2014. RSC PetaStream is the world's first HPC solution with Intel Phi 7120D. Based on Fujitsu's joint research with Tohoku University that began in 2012, the two partners have developed a 3D tsunami simulator that can replicate in fine detail the surge of water in urban areas as well as river surges caused by a tsunami. The joint research succeeded in combining a 2D tsunami-propagation simulation technology developed by Professor Fumihiko Imamura, director of the International Research Institute of Disaster Science in Tohoku University with Fujitsu's 3D fluid simulation technology. As a result, the researchers were able to accurately replicate the complex changes a tsunami undergoes as it interacts with coastal topography or buildings in urban areas, as well as the process of water surges in urban areas and rivers.
