Scientists at the European Human Brain Project - set to announce more than a dozen new research partnerships worth 8.3 million euro in funding later this month - the Allen Institute for Brain Science, and the US BRAIN Initiative are developing new paradigms for understanding how the human brain works in health and disease. Today, their international and collaborative projects are defined, explored, and compared during "Inventing New Ways to Understand the Human Brain", at the 2014 AAAS Annual Meeting in Chicago. Dutch supercomputer centre SURFsara has selected TelecityGroup, a European supplier of carrier-neutral data centres, to supply data centre services at Amsterdam Science Park, that will enable the advanced, high-performance computing that is required for the advancement of scientific research in the Netherlands. TelecityGroup will build an entirely new, extremely efficient premium data centre at its existing AMS01 data centre location at Amsterdam Science Park. The particular task envisaged by this competitive SME call pertains to the execution of innovative experiments by SMEs that demonstrate technological expertise, novelty and quality in the area of Future Internet, e.g. in domains such as wired and wireless IP networks, Cloud computing, software defined networks and innovative Internet services. The Call identifier is Fed4FIRE-SME-1. The Call title is "Innovative Experiments by SMEs". The language in which the proposal must be submitted is English. Larry Smarr, a physicist whose work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on calculating black hole collisions led him to champion a federal commitment to dramatically enhance U.S. computing power - which in turn led to the development of NCSA Mosaic, the precursor to web browsers - has been named as the first 2014 recipient of the Golden Goose Award. The Golden Goose Award honours researchers whose federally funded research may not have seemed to have significant practical applications at the time it was conducted but has resulted in major economic or other benefits to society. The announcement was made in Chicago by Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-IL) during a symposium on the Golden Goose Award led by Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN) and Rep. PGI, a suite of high-performance parallelizing compilers and development tools, now features support for the latest version of the OpenACC programming standard on accelerator platforms. Available today, PGI 2014 Compilers and Tools includes new capabilities for programming the recently announced NVIDIA Tesla K40 GPU accelerators using version 2.0 features of the OpenACC directives-based parallel programming specification. Shinshu University recently has decided to deploy a Fujitsu supercomputer system in its R&D facility to newly develop innovative water-filtration and water-circulation systems. The Australian Department of Defence has extended its Distributed Computing Centralised Services (DCCS) Contract with Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand for an additional three years. Cray Inc. has issued financial results for the year and fourth quarter ended December 31, 2013. For 2013, Cray reported total revenue of $525.7 million, which compares with $421.1 million for 2012, an increase of 25% year over year. Net income for 2013 was $32.2 million, or $0.81 per diluted share, compared to $161.2 million, or $4.27 per diluted share, for 2012. The 2012 net income results included a $139.1 million pre-tax gain, which resulted from the sale of the company's interconnect hardware development programme to Intel Corporation. Read further...

IBM has achieved a new technological advancement that will help improve Internet speeds to 200-400 Gigabits per second (Gb/s) at extremely low power. The speed boost is based on a device that can be used to improve transferring Big Data between Clouds and data centres four times faster than current technology. At this speed 160 Gigabytes, the equivalent of a two-hour, 4K ultra-high definition movie or 40,000 songs, could be downloaded in only a few seconds.
