For the fourth time in a row, Primeur Magazine was granted the honour to double-interview Prof. Dr. Thomas Sterling, Professor of Informatics & Computing, Chief Scientist and Associate Director, CREST, Indiana University, and Professor Satoshi Matsuoka, Tokyo Institute of Technology, National Institute of Informatics/JST CREST, Japan, about their view on Exascale development. More than ever, for all the really big issues, whether it be exascale, top parallel programming, Big Data/HPC-acknowledgment, or international collaboration benefits: the rubber is heavily craving to finally meet the road. Because we are now “half way” on the road to exascale, a lot was discussed and projected. Hence we decided to publish the interview in four parts: Part I: Growing gap between the top10 systems and the rest of HPC Part II: Exascale excitement Part III: Big Data Part IV: International cooperation & Projection for next year This week we start with "Growing gap between the top10 systems and the rest of HPC". Contrail Project partner INRIA has made available the VEP 2.1 release. Virtual Execution Platform is a Cloud middleware software that interfaces multiple Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) Clouds. Read further...
Europe has taken a vital step in its efforts to become a major player in Cloud computing. The announcement of the Cloud-for-Europe (C4E) platform in July is a tangible outcome of the nascent European Cloud Partnership. It will bring private and public organisations together under one 'virtual' roof to thrash out a strategy for boosting the take-up of Cloud computing in Europe. Read further...
Reports of secret US government data collection programmes (PRISM) and the subsequent leak of data only serve to highlight the need for a robust security strategy to underpin future growth in Cloud computing in Europe and beyond. This and other important challenges were discussed by the European Cloud Partnership (ECP) Steering Board during its latest meeting. Read further...
As part of its mission to support the scientific community and encourage better use of satellite data to monitor and track our planet, the European Space Agency (ESA) is developing a SuperSites Exploitation Platform (SSEP) on Interoute Virtual Data Centre. This new platform aims to enable the analysis and interpretation of large volumes of satellite data in order to better understand the processes causing geohazards such as earthquakes and volcanic activity. Read further...
The integration of Nimbula Director into Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud will enable customers and service providers to deploy an open, standards-based Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) foundation with proven breakthrough application performance for Java, Oracle Fusion Middleware and Oracle Applications. Read further...
IBM will invest US$ 17 million in a new data centre located in Bogotá. The new centre will provide Colombian companies with Cloud computing and Big Data services, which will enable organisations to transform their business to meet the growing demands of the local and international markets and to offer flexible, high quality and personalized services for their customers. The new facility expands the US$8 million investment IBM made in Colombia when the company opened a data centre in 2011. Read further...
HP has launched new Cloud-based analytics as a service built on HP's HAVEn Big Data analytics platform, helping clients solve business problems and create new revenue opportunities. By leveraging HP HAVEn, clients can more effectively analyse and derive value from their information, such as increase sales with targeted client offerings, improve supply chain performance, detect fraud or discover security risks. Bull and Sinequa have together achieved unmatched performance on bullion with a Real-time Search and Big Data Analytics, a solution designed by Sinequa, one of the experts in Search and Unified Information Access. Read further...
ADVA Optical Networking has successfully demonstrated a virtualized optical transmission network using Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and OpenFlow-based control. Developed in partnership with IBM and Marist College, this demonstration represents an industry first. While virtualization within data centre walls is standard practice, extending the virtualization to the physical network that interconnects data centres has not been possible - until now. The demonstration took place in Marist College's lab facilities within its New York campus. Read further...
The European Landscape Study of Research Data Management offers an overview of how to effectively support researchers in their data management. It looks at interventions by funding agencies, research institutions, national bodies and publishers across the European Union member states. The report also makes recommendations that organisations can adopt to help their researchers. Read further...
The cutting edge work delivered by HPC Midlands and Bull Information Systems has been given another plaudit with the innovative supercomputing centre of excellence shortlisted for the prestigious Times Higher Education award for Outstanding Contribution to Innovation and Technology. The award recognises breakthroughs in the University sector that have a direct impact on the UK economy. Read further...
While searching for ever smaller devices that can be used as data storage systems and novel sensors, physicists at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) have directly observed magnetization dynamics processes in magnetic nanowires and thus paved the way for further research in the field of nanomagnetism. Small magnetic domain wall structures in nanowires can be used to store information and, for example, can be used as angle sensors. Initial applications based on magnetic domain walls have been developed and are already in use in sensor technology. The current findings represent the first experimentally recorded direct imaging of predicted correlations between magnetic spin structure and wall velocity. The newly discovered properties could be used for other future applications in information technology. Read further...
Magnetic molecules are regarded as promising functional units for the future of information processing. An interdisciplinary team of researchers from Jülich and Aachen were the first to produce particularly robust magnetic molecules that enable a direct electrical readout of magnetic information. This was made possible by selecting the rare earth metal neodymium as the central building block of the molecule. The team's research findings were published on-line in the renowned journalNature Communications(DOI: 10.1038/ncomms3425). Read further...
